The Philadelphia 76ers and Aaron Barzilai have parted ways, a source with knowledge of the situation has told LibertyBallers.
Barzilai joined the 76ers front office in November 2012 as the Director of Analytics. He first served under General Manager Tony DiLeo, the first step in new majority owner Joshua Harris' plan to make statistical analysis a bigger part of the 76ers decision making process.
Barzilai had previously spent 4 years working in the Memphis Grizzlies' Basketball Analytics department. Before that, Barzilai had come to prominence in the statistical analysis community with the development of BasketballValue.com, which calculated the adjusted plus-minus for both individual players and 5-man units.
The 76ers front office has undergone change of late. Courtney Witte, long time Director of Player Personnel, left the team last summer. The Sixers then hired Sachin Gupta as their Vice President of Basketball Operations in November 2014, and added Ben Falk as the Vice President of Basketball Strategy in September.
Gupta, who had worked with Sam Hinkie in the Houston Rockets front office, was previously working for the 76ers as a consultant. Falk previously spent 4 seasons as the Basketball Analytics Manager for the Portland Trailblazers.
There is no word yet on whether the 76ers plan to replace Barzilai's position within the team.
