The Sixers have waived guard Xavier Silas and big man Mikki Moore, bringing their training camp roster down to 16.

The Philadelphia 76ers announced today that they have waived guard Xavier Silas and power forward/center Mikki Moore.

The moves bring the 76ers training camp roster down to 16, which means at least one more player will have to be released before the start of the season to reach the NBA roster limit of 15 players. In years past, Doug Collins and the 76ers have preferred to keep one roster spot open, employing a 14 man roster frequently.

The final cut(s) would likely come from the group of Dan Gadzuric, Devin Searcy, and Damien Wilkins, none of whom have guaranteed contracts beyond training camp.

Mikkie Moore has played 13 seasons in the NBA, most recently with the Golden State warriors for 7 games last season. Silas played 2 games with the 76ers at the tail end of last season and has been on the 76ers summer league team the last two years.

The team has wrapped up its last training camp practice and will fly to Orlando today for its first preseason game against the Magic tomorrow, which will not be televised locally.

While it seems they decided against bringing Josh Howard into the fold, a few other new names have come to the forefront as the Sixers announce they've added four guys to the training camp roster. Dan Gadzuric (who we heard came in for a workout a few days ago), former Sixer and friend of the blog Xavier Silas coming off a pretty serious-looking injury, Orlando Summer Leaguer and Queen Regent Devin Searcy, and journeyman Damien Wilkins will all be camping for the Sixers at St. Joe's come next Tuesday.

Of the four, Wilkins is the only one that raises a few eyebrows. He was, at one point, an average basketball player for the since defunct Seattle Supersonics, but advanced stats were never kind to him, as the nephew of Dominique wasn't a particularly good shooter and didn't get to the foul line. He fizzled out with the Hawks and Pistons the past two years, averaging just over 3 points per game between them. I don't particularly see the point in inviting him to camp when I'm pretty sure Justin Holiday is still on the market. But he *is* a veteran and we all know how Doug likes to fill his bench with washed up vets.

Speaking of! Hey Dan Gadzuric! He likely won't make the team, but he'll bang around with Bynum in the post and I suppose that's good enough for me. If he can get Bynum into the shape he needs to be in, I'll pitch in a few bucks to sent the Gadzurices a nice muffin basket.

Good to see X is healthy enough to get a camp invite. I've never had a skull fracture but it doesn't sound particularly pleasant and I can't imagine recovering from one was much fun either. I don't love his game, but he texts with Jordan sometimes and he seems like a great dude so I can't really complain about him making the team as the last guy.

Searcy is around strictly for comic relief, I'm sure of it. I will not rest until everyone knows him by his nickname, the Queen Regent.

Man, if it was 2005, we'd be swimming in it. First Josh Howard comes in for a workout -- a former All-Star and current elderly malcontent -- and now the Sixers bring in former Milwaukee Bucks person and journeyman Dan Gadzuric for a workout and a potential training camp invite. Dan spent the better part of his age 33 season on his couch until the Knicks picked him up to play two scoreless games of basketball. They won both!

Dan is no longer a player that can be on the court for longer than 4-5 minutes at a time, but in short stints, he at least provides some semblance of defense and defensive rebounding ability. Here's what Posting and Toasting's Seth Rosenthal said about him last year when the Knicks signed the Dutchman.

Gadzuric is an okay player-- he's tall and makes some funny faces

Thanks Seth!

The Sixers already have a ton of bigs, so I don't really see how he could get minutes. Andrew Bynum, Spencer Hawes, Kwame Brown, Lavoy Allen, and Arnett Moultrie will all play at least a little at the 5. I have no idea where Gadzuric would fit into this plan.

Add him to the Dong/Primoz/Frozone Team of Large Oddballs.

Everyone summarily shrugs.

According to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, the Sixers will reportedly spend the next two days meeting with free-agent swingman Josh Howard. Minnesota and San Antonio are also rumored to be in the mix for the nine-year veteran, who started 18 games for the Utah Jazz last season before suffering a left knee injury in March.

While Howard excelled for the Dallas Mavericks as recently as 2009 (and even made the Western Conference All-Star team back in 2007), he's little more than a role player at this point in his career. In 43 games for the Jazz last season, the 32-year-old Howard - who played almost exclusively at small forward - averaged 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game on 40 percent shooting.

The Sixers are pretty much set at both wing positions, so it's hard to determine what the team's motive is for bringing the 6'7" Howard in for a visit. Minutes at small forward will be hard to come by next season, and Howard is far too inconsistent of a shooter to beat out either Jason Richardson or Nick Young at the 2. That's all in addition to the whole attitude thing he's been slammed for the past few years.

That said, it WOULD be interesting to see Howard's reaction whenever Ayla Brown sings the national anthem next year.

Would anybody like this move on a veteran's minimum-type deal?
