Kelly Oubre Jr. accompanied the Sixers on their mini-road trip, with Nick Nurse hinting at a possible return in the near future. Now, we have a better idea of when Oubre Jr. will return, with Shams Charania of The Athletic reporting that there’s a chance he’ll play on Dec. 6 against the Washington Wizards.
After suffering a fractured rib on Nov. 11, Philadelphia 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. is targeting a return to action next week, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. There is a chance Oubre plays as soon as Wednesday at Wizards. The 76ers also host Atlanta at home next Friday. pic.twitter.com/hTyYMY0TCx— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) November 30, 2023
This timeline makes a lot of sense when you factor in the Sixers’ scheduling. They’ll play the Boston Celtics Friday and immediately have a four-day break before they play the Washington Wizards next Wednesday. This will give Oubre additional time to get his conditioning up and ease him back into things against one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Oubre’s return should be a much-needed boost for the Sixers, who were rolling in the limited time that they had both Nico Batum and him. The Sixers’ bench has been awesome defensively, but has lacked a consistent scorer. Oubre should provide that, along with shot creation in the non-Joel Embiid or non-Tyrese Maxey lineups. Before his injury, Oubre was averaging 16.3 points and 5.1 rebounds on 50 percent shooting.
