76ers star Joel Embiid will miss today’s road game vs. Timberwolves on second night of back-to-back due to left hip soreness, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. It will be the reigning NBA MVP’s first absence of the season for 10-4 Philadelphia.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) November 22, 2023
Not only is it the second game of a back-to-back, but last night’s overtime battle with the Cleveland Cavaliers probably did not help matters. The big man played 41 minutes in the Sixers’ loss.
Embiid also had been listed as questionable a number of times last week with left hip soreness as well, but played in each of those games. This is his first absence of the season.
Embiid is averaging 31.9 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists this campaign. Any game without him is difficult, but it’s going to be even more difficult tonight going up against a red-hot Timberwolves squad.
With him sidelined, Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse has a few options. Paul Reed will almost definitely start, but who backs up Reed will be interesting. Mo Bamba? Marcus Morris, Sr.? Could we get our first look at Nicolas Batum at the five?
The Sixers and Timberwolves will tip off at 8 p.m. ET tonight.
