The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the Philadelphia 76ers are waiving Montrezl Harrell ahead of the regular season.
The Philadelphia 76ers are waiving center Montrezl Harrell, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Harrell’s ACL/meniscus injury and absence make him the release due to a roster crunch, but he’s aiming to make a return after the All-Star break.

The Sixers originally signed Harrell nearly a year ago. Unfortunately, he drastically underwhelmed and was out of the rotation entirely by the middle of the year. In a surprising move, the Sixers re-signed Harrell this past summer after he turned down his player option. He later suffered an ACL/meniscus injury in a workout that would rule him out for most of — if not all of — the season. Charania also added that the Sixers will continue to support Harrell’s rehab into the future.

Outside of the lack of availability, it was incredibly unlikely that Harrell was going to crack the Sixers’ rotation at any point this season. Currently, they’re rostering three backup bigs: Paul Reed, Mo Bamba and Filip Petrusev. Hopefully Trez can rebound from a really tough injury elsewhere, but it was never happening in Philly.
With this move, the Sixers’ roster appears set for opening night. They have 15 standard contracts and three two-way deals. Petrusev and Danny Green, who were signed to partial and non-guaranteed deals, respectively, will seemingly both be on the team. It is possible though that the Sixers make another move before heading to Milwaukee on Thursday night when they open their season against Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and the Bucks.
