Sixers take on Hawks for round 2 of mini series

NBA: Atlanta Hawks at Philadelphia 76ers Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

For the second time in three days, the Philadelphia 76ers take on the Atlanta Hawks as the two squads matchup Friday evening (7:00 pm ET) in South Philadelphia. The Sixers enter the contest in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference standings, 1.5 games back of the Brooklyn Nets (who take on the Portland Trail Blazers Friday night). The Hawks, on the other hand, head into this one currently seeded 5th in the East, just one game up on both the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat.

When these two teams squared off Wednesday night, Atlanta was severely shorthanded, with Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, DeAndre Hunter and Bogdan Bogdanovic all out due to injury. The first three players on that list lead the Hawks in minutes per game (though Hunter has been out since March 24th) and Bogdanovic comes in at 6th on Atlanta in minutes per game. Suffice to say the Hawks were without some key pieces, resulting in a blowout loss for Atlanta as the Sixers came out on top 127-83.

Not a single Sixers starter played more than 26 minutes Wednesday evening, but the starters used their relatively limited run to do significant damage. Joel Embiid, Seth Curry, and Tobias Harris combined for 54 points, with Curry shooting a highly efficient 8 for 12 from the floor including 4 for 7 from 3PT. In his second game back after missing four contests, Ben Simmons was all over the court in 15 minutes of play, scoring 8 points (4 for 5 FG) to go along with 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. With a high dosage of bench minutes in this one, we saw George Hill play with high energy and some burst and Furkan Korkmaz splash 4 of 6 3PT. Good things all around for Philly.

Could tonight’s matchup be a different ball game? As of Friday morning, Young, Bogdanovic, Tony Snell, and Clint Capela are all listed as game-time decisions on RotoWire. Huerter, Hunter, and Cam Reddish are out. So Atlanta will again be shorthanded, but may have their star point guard back in Trae Young.
