According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the 76ers will be without multiple players for some time because of close contact with Seth Curry, who recently tested positive for COVID-19. The team learned of Curry’s status near the start of the game last night, per a report by ESPN. The team stayed overnight in New York, and have begun extensive testing today, as part of the league’s health and safety protocols.

Curry was on the bench with ankle soreness and sat, while wearing a mask, near Joel Embiid and Assistant Coach Sam Cassell, per a report by Woj for some time before he left the area to isolate. It’s strange that the game was allowed to begin before the test results were in. Had they waited for that information, perhaps Curry would not have been on the bench near his teammates and coaches.

Embiid played in the game, and has said he will self-quarantine from his family until he learns his own status, because of his close contact with his teammate recently. At one point Dwight Howard was near Curry as well.

Navigating the treacherous coronavirus is an element that all teams with championship aspirations will have to adjust to. Recently, Head Coach Doc Rivers admitted to being fined for not properly wearing his mask during games.

As head coach, Doc is the leader of the unit and hopefully can set the precedent for mask use moving forwards. It’s imperative not just for basketball reasons, but for health and safety that the team do all they can to keep everyone safe. It’s unclear at this point who will miss time, for how long, or if there will be any more positive tests. The incubation period for the virus varies from person to person.

Thoughts and prayers to Curry, who is married to Doc Rivers’ daughter, Callie Rivers. And hopefully the rest of the players and coaches are healthy and well too.

As for basketball, the schedule picks up in a hurry. There are a flurry of back-to-backs and lots of games over the next month. So if they’re going to be without key players, it could certainly impact their place atop the Eastern Conference standings.
