Shot Profile Changes Since the Trade Deadline

How have the Sixers players changed their shot profiles since the deadline?

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Oklahoma City Thunder Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Overview

Since the acquisition of Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, and Mike Scott, it has been hypothesized that the shot distribution of the remaining Sixers would change. With this relatively short piece, I wanted to take a look and see if there are any large scale changes that are immediately apparent in a series of graphs and tables. Here’s a quick rundown of the information presented under each player. The data is exclusively the games since the Jimmy Butler trade.

  1. Shot location chart
  2. Shot density chart - densities are increased in the “after” section as there are fewer attempts overall
  3. Approximate area field goal percentage (take these with a grain of salt)
  4. Density of shot attempts by game time
  5. Proportion of shot attempts that are threes, in the paint, and in the restricted area

Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid Shot Location Table

Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Before Trade 20.8 43 16.4
After Trade 23.5 32.4 23.5

Only four games here, so not sure I’m comfortable saying much one way or another.

Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons Shot Location Table

Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Before Trade 0.2 67.4 26.2
After Trade 3 58 32

Ben has increased his three point attempt rate by 15x which is obviously a meaningful number. Fewer attempts in the RA, but his increased post-up abilities could contribute to the higher proportion of non-RA paint attempts. Once again, his shot distribution ruins the charts I like to make.

Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler Shot Location Table

Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Before Trade 22.5 37.2 14.5
After Trade 13.5 44.8 15.6

Fewer threes (possibly due to that wrist injury), but more attempts at the rim, where the bulk of the increase appears to come from an approximately 2x increase (in terms of percentage) of cutting dunks or layups, 8.1% compared to 16.2%.

JJ Redick

JJ Redick Shot Location Table

Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Before Trade 57.3 12.8 3.8
After Trade 60 6 5

Interesting that JJ’s attempts at the rim have decreased from 61 (13%) to 6 (6.0%), although it is of course difficult to draw major conclusions from this few games post trade.

T.J. McConnell

T.J. McConnell Shot Location Table

Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Time 3PT Restricted Area Paint (non-RA)
Before Trade 12.7 24.1 32.3
After Trade 4.7 32.6 23.3

Fewer jumpers and more layups? Not particularly concerned here one way or another.

Next Steps

Pretty small dataset to work with here since the trade, but this is something I can certainly update and the conclusion of the regular season and break it out further by cuts, dunks, fadeaways, etc.
