The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone, and Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Elton Brand has overhauled the Sixers depth and bench unit. Out are Markelle Fultz, Landry Shamet, Wilson Chandler and Mike Muscala. In are Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, Mike Scott, James Ennis and Jonathon Simmons. A new look Sixers squad takes the floor tonight for the first time as the Denver Nuggets come to town.
As of this writing (2/8 at 12:00 pm), the new additions for Philly are all listed as game-time-decisions, which makes the prospects for tonight’s game hard to evaluate. Brett Brown will either be very short on depth or be forced to incorporate a handful of new faces on the fly.
Despite dropping their previous two games, the Sixers have been playing well as the All-Star break nears. They’re 6-4 in their last 10 and their good-for-5th-place 34-20 record places them just 1.5 games back of the 3rd place Indiana Pacers.
The Denver Nuggets continue their impressive season as one of the Western Conference’s best teams, with only the Golden State Warriors ahead of Denver in the standings. The Nuggets are 7-3 in their last 10, and one of those wins were against the Sixers on January 26th.
Leading the way for the Nuggets’ success is Nikola Jokic, who has turned in an MVP campaign so far in a world where Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t exist. Jokic is averaging 20.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and a very impressive 7.7 assists per game, serving as the catalyst for Denver's offense. Jokic and Joel Embiid, an MVP candidate in his own right, will be the match-up to watch this evening.
If the Sixers are able to get their new additions suited up, this could be a very fun game. Both of these teams are contenders in their respective conferences, and they are loaded with talent. The meeting will serve as a good test for the Sixers.
Update (12:32 pm):
