Following such a wild win for the Sixers Wednesday night, I decided to go back into the box score and pull out some interesting facts.

Item of Interest #1: DeMar DeRozan’s Mid-range-ness
Mr. DeRozan shot 12-for-19 with zero three point attempts and three free throw attempts for a total of 26 points. If we use those criteria to find similar performances (since 2010), here’s what we get amongst players designated as guards, guard-forwards, or forward-guards.
DeMar has six of the ten performances that fit that criteria, alongside other known non-3-point shooters Dwyane Wade (29.0%) and mid-career LeBron James. Based on that table, the better question is how the hell did peak LeBron take 21 field goal attempts (with zero 3-pointers), and only take three foul shots, while achieving an ortg of 154?
Item of Interest #2: How Did the Spurs Lose?
Honestly, I am not sure how San Antonio actually lost. As a team, they shot 62 percent from two, 48 percent from 3, and 86 percent from the line. Since 1979, the only team to ever hit those marks and lose was San Antonio last night. If you reduce each statistic by 5 percent across the board (57/43/81), there are still only 36 teams to hit those offensive benchmarks and lose. Furthermore, only 19 of those 36 losses occurred while giving up less than 122 points. Here’s the table for your perusal.
Item of Interest #3: Joel Embiid is Good (and Interesting)
I wrote a previous article on Pareto frontiers, and I think it’s an interesting way to look at the combination of particular stat line’s uniqueness and quality. Here’s a plot of Joel’s career games (only points/rebounds), with the San Antonio game highlighted.
Based on distance to the frontier, this was Joel’s fourth-most unique points/rebounds game of his career. Additionally, here is the list of players since 1946 who have had more than one 33+ point/19+ rebound/7+ offensive rebound game.

Item of Interest #4: Hot Shooting from 3
Both teams combined to shoot 30-for-63 (48%) from 3-point range, with the Sixers shooting 17-for-36 and the Spurs 13-for-27. I dove into the records to find games where those levels of accuracy and usage were met or exceeded.
We find only ten such games in the entire history of the NBA (the 1/16/19 GSW vs. NOP game is duplicated for some reason). Unsurprisingly, all have come since 2006.
This concludes another edition of Box Score oddities. Hopefully, the Sixers continue winning in interesting ways so I can keep writing these.
