I hope you were able to sleep in after your late-night New Year’s Eve festivities, Sixers fans, because Brett Brown’s club begins the 2019 schedule with a start time fit for night owls in Los Angeles. Philadelphia ended the 2018 calendar year on the lowest possible note, losing by 34 points two nights ago in Portland. The Clippers have been off since Saturday night, when they lost to the Spurs by 11 points at home. After jumping out to a great start this season and becoming a league darling, the Clippers are hanging in there at 21-15, currently tied for 4th place in the Western Conference.
In the first game between the clubs back in November, the Sixers earned a 122-113 victory, powered by a monster 41-point, 13-rebound performance from Joel Embiid. Heading into tonight’s meeting, Joel Embiid is still questionable, although he did participate in today’s shootaround, so let loose with the optimism that he will be on the floor.
More than most teams, the Clippers have the ability to stress Philadelphia’s lack of depth. Two of their top four scorers, Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, are a part of Los Angeles’ second unit. That’s last year’s Sixth Man of the Year winner and a top candidate for the award this year against the Sixers’ collection of fungible NBA-caliber talent. To come out on top in a tough road matchup, the Sixers will need their stars to play like stars — Joel Embiid being available would go a long way toward making that happen.
