Liberty Ballers Community Big Board: Lonnie Walker selected #11, vote for #12

The Miami guard’s upside is as high as his hair.

Bryan Colangelo may or may not have overruled some of his fellow executives who cautioned against drafting Markelle Fultz, but the crowd always prevails in our Community Big Board. With the 11th overall selection, Miami shooting guard Lonnie Walker received the nod, very narrowly edging out Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The 19-year-old is certainly in the mix for Philadelphia with the 10th overall pick. Walker worked out for the Sixers in Monday‘s group workout alongside Miles Bridges. Standing 6’4.5” with a 6’10.15” wingspan, Walker has good size for a guard and should be an above average wing defender. The Reading, PA native is one of the more athletic players in this draft class. At the draft combine, he flashed a 40” vertical leap and was among the leaders in the shuttle run and three quarter sprint.

Offensively, Walker’s shooting numbers weren’t anything special. He shot 34.6% from three and 73.8% from the foul line. However, he displays good form and got his shot off in a variety of different ways, often rising up off the dribble or coming off screens. His game-winning three against Boston College was a prime example of Walker being unafraid to take the big shot. Walker does need to expand his game going to the basket. He only averaged 2.0 free throw attempts per game and rarely showcased a dribble-drive game to create for others, tallying less than 2 assists per game.

Entering the league after just one year with the Hurricanes, Walker is a raw prospect who will likely take some time to reach his potential at the NBA level. However, the outline for an explosive two-way wing is there, and somebody will bank on that potential being transformed into production.

Next up, the vote for #12. French guard Elie Okobo has been added to the list.
