According to a press release from the Philadelphia 76ers, Markelle Fultz has been diagnosed with Thoracic outlet syndrome:
“STATEMENT FROM PHILADELPHIA 76ERS VICE PRESIDENT OF ATHLETE CARE DR. DANIEL MEDINA:
DEC. 4, 2018 — Markelle Fultz has recently completed a thorough series of consultations with specialists across several disciplines. Thoracic outlet syndrome, which involves compression or irritation in the thoracic outlet (area between lower neck and upper chest), was identified.
Physical therapy was recommended for Fultz before returning to play.
Fultz will begin this physical therapy immediately, is out indefinitely, and further updates will be provided as appropriate.”
A quick Google search says that Thoracic outlet syndrome is essentially a nerve compression causing pain or discomfort like a feeling of pins and needles/tingling.
I’m honesty not sure how to react to these updates anymore. I hope Markelle gets healthy, and I’m sure there’s at least something to this. But to what degree it is responsible for his struggles, I haven’t a clue. Apparently multiple specialists were seen throughout this process, which makes one skeptical of this diagnosis. Receiving multiple opinions is the smart thing to do, but with how long this whole thing has dragged on, color me skeptical that they’ve finally found the one doctor who had a light bulb go off. Is it legitimate, or is it a diagnosis Fultz’s agent wanted to hear?
