Yesterday, we kicked off a series in which we ask for your help in valuing the Sixers roster, including the 15-player NBA roster (12 active players, 3 inactive players) as well as the team’s two-way players (Demetrius Jackson and Shake Milton). The goal here is to rank the Sixers’ entire roster according to the projected on-court value each player will offer in the 2018-2019 season. This ranking does not concern itself with trade value or future value — Zhaire Smith might have more trade value than Wilson Chandler, but Chandler likely contributes more on the floor this season (or maybe not, you’re the judge!). We’re simply asking who you believe will contribute to winning, ordered from least to most.
In our first round of polling, we tackled the 17th and 16th most impactful players. Coming in at 17th, receiving 468 votes out of a total 1,165 (41%) was Demetrius Jackson. Moving on to the 16th most impactful player: Jerryd Bayless. Demetrius Jackson actually received the most votes for spots 16 and 17, but Jackson received so many votes at 16 because many who voted Shake Milton or Jerryd Bayless at 17, voted Jackson at 16. In any event, people were sure Jackson was the least or 2nd least conducive player to wins. As for Bayless’ rank at 16, while he and Milton were a close call (Bayless’ 283 votes to Milton’s 219), Bayless blew Milton away for votes in the 17 spot (297 vs. 92). This means that while almost as many people believe Milton to be the 16th most impactful as people who voted Bayless, the majority of voters expect Bayless to be one of the two least impactful players along with Jackson.
Demetrius Jackson
I was surprised Jackson was offered a two-way contract for the second time since the Sixers first brought him into the organization last January. I thought that resource would’ve been better allocated on Jonah Bolden. Jackson has been frustrating to watch from what we’ve seen in Summer League; the guy wants to prove himself, but at the cost of other, more important prospects. He’s a long shot to contribute at all to the Sixers this year, and I’m with the voters on this one in placing him last in the rankings.
Jerryd Bayless
I have to respect the votes of the people, but I don’t agree with this at all. I’m a fan of Shake Milton’s game but I have a hard time seeing how he finds his way onto the court for the Sixers this season outside of some garbage time minutes on an injured-riddled roster, should such a scenario present itself — though I do hope to see Milton on the Sixers a handful of nights. Jerryd Bayless, on the other hand, can still provide the Sixers some floor spacing despite the boos raining down on him in preseason. I don’t want to go overboard here, because Bayless is likely to get plenty of DNPs or simply be inactive for a lot of games. But I expect him to get at least more garbage time minutes than Milton. In any case, were arguing over relatively minor players here.
