2017 Liberty Ballers Community Big Board No. 11: Donovan Mitchell fits the Sixers

The Louisville point guard is in the 3-and-D mold.

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Louisville Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Donovan Mitchell out of Louisville rounds out the community top 10. That’s also exactly where he came in at on the Liberty Ballers’ writers own Big Board 3.0. Here’s what Jake Pavorsky, who has Mitchell ranked 11th, had to say about Mitchell in our big board post:

I haven’t felt this passionate about a mid-first round talent since Rodney Hood in 2014. Mitchell’s cut from that Avery Bradley cloth, a solid two-way guard who can handle and shoot while also playing lockdown defense. Perhaps the only thing to question about his game is his shot selection - he knocked down just 40.8 percent of his field goal attempts on more than 13 shots per game. But he’s built like an NBA-ready player and strokes it like one. He could end up being the steal of the draft. If the Sixers pull off that hypothetical trade with the Sacramento Kings for picks five and 10, I’d give Mitchell a very hard look with that second pick.

I’m personally all-in on Mitchell. “Cut from that Avery Bradley cloth” is all I need to hear really to get excited about a prospect. There is a need in the league for players of this caliber and skill set, especially so with the Sixers. Having Mitchell defend opponents’ ball-handlers while spotting up for threes offensively just fits so perfectly. If the often discussed trade down with the Kings for the fifth and 10th picks were to occur, I’d jump all over Mitchell at No. 10.

As for who’s next, I added two guards: Josh Hart and Derrick White. Though senior guards aren’t typically the types of prospects I cling to, I love both of their games. I had Hart and White 12th and 14th, respectively, on my own big board.
