Brett Brown Responds to Jahlil Okafor’s “Actual NBA Coaching Staff” Comment

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Phoenix Suns Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today, we talked about Jahlil Okafor’s comment on working with the Nets staff. Here’s his quote if you missed it:

That’s why I’m happy I’m here with the actual NBA coaching staff that’s taking care of me every day. When I was in Philly I was figuring it out on my own. I had my own trainer [Rick Lewis] that I’ve been working with since eighth grade working me out. But it’s a different level when you’re actually working with an NBA staff.

Brett Brown isn’t exactly one to throw anyone under the bus. Sure, his go-to game time exclamation is “[expletive],” but he’s always one to stress player growth and management, sometimes to his own detriment. So while Brett’s response isn’t surprising as someone who read that quote the way everyone else did, it’s a little weird to hear him say this:

You can write a whole book on the Okafor era in Philadelphia, but it’s hard to imagine the Sixers staff giving up on Okafor would be anything but a miniscule footnote, if it even made it past initial edits.
