Sixers Showing Interest in Free Agent Dion Waiters

Is Bryan Colangelo targeting the local product as a free agent signing?

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

In the same hour ESPN's Marc Stein reported that the Sixers could make a play for restricted free agent Harrison Barnes, Sheridan Hoops' Michael Scotto is reporting that Philadelphia also is interested in Dion Waiters.

The flamboyant, charismatic two-guard has had nothing short of a sporadic NBA career, falling out of favor in Cleveland, to becoming a surprising piece in the Thunder's playoff run last season. His numbers dipped last season, as Waiters contributed just 9.8 PPG, 2.6 RPG and 2.0 APG on an OKC team who went with offensive-bereft swingman Andre Roberson late in the season.

There's an obvious need at shooting guard, even with Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot possibly soaking up some minutes there this season, with incumbents Hollis Thompson and Nik Stauskas failing to ascend last year as two-way players. It remains to be seen how invested general manager Bryan Colangelo is in Waiters' talents, but entering his fifth year in the association, Waiters still has a chance for growth.
