The Delaware 87ers announced today that they have parted ways point guard Aquille Carr.
The Delaware 87ers of D-League released guard Aquille Carr. Another cautionary tale.

Carr, who hadn't appeared in a game since December 15, was selected in the third round of the NBA Development League Draft in November, but was never able to crack the Sevens' starting lineup. In 10 games with the 87ers, Carr averaged 10.7 points, 1.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.1 turnovers in 14.0 minutes per contest.
Last week, we wrote about Carr's struggles with the Sevens, and besides the obvious issues concerning his size (5'6", 148 pounds), it's clear that Carr isn't a natural playmaker. That said, don't be surprised if "The Crimestopper" eventually ends up overseas: As recently as April, the 20-year-old Carr turned down a lucrative offer to play professionally in China.
Considering that the maximum salary in the D-League is just $24,000 (plus housing), it makes sense - both financially and developmentally - for Carr to spend a year or two working on his game in Europe or Asia before declaring for the NBA draft.
Carr's selection in the D-League draft was a low-risk, moderate-reward gamble for the 87ers. More than anything, it's a pretty telling example of an organization doing its due diligence on a prospect who caught their eye. The fact that they released Carr just two months into the experiment shows that they aren't afraid to cut their losses, and is a promising sign for the future.
