76ers waive Maalik Wayns, Then Bring Him Back!

The 76ers have waived rookie guard Maalik Wayns. Wayns, a native Philadelphian who played for Roman Catholic and Villanova, would have had his full contract guaranteed if he were on the roster on January 10th.

[UPDATE: They just brought him back on a 10-day contract. Clearly saving money before his Rookie deal went full-season. I don't have an issue with this, I just wish they'd bring in somebody, uh, better. - Levin]

The 76ers have waived Maalik Wayns, the rookie combo guard from Villanova and Roman Catholic.

After averaging 10.3 points on 46% shooting from the field, Wayns struggled during the season. He appeared in only 20 games for the 76ers, averaging less than 8 minutes per game, scoring 2.5 points per game on 24.2% shooting from the field, with a PER of 1.5 and a true shooting percentage of 34.2%.

Wayns was a surprise signing during the offseason, an undrafted free agent after three somewhat disappointing seasons at Villanova.

The departure comes the same day that the 76ers called fellow rookie Arnett Moultrie up from the D-League. The timing is mostly coincidental, as the 76ers had room for Moultrie on the roster without parting ways with Wayns. The decision to waive Wayns happened at this time as his contract would have become fully guaranteed if he were on the roster January 10th, and he needed to have gone through the waiver process by then.

Should Wayns clear waivers, the 76ers could bring him back on a series of 10-day contracts, which teams would use as of January 5th.
