Sixers Draft 2011: Tourney Prospects

Photo

Read about the 13 prospects I've unofficially put on my Sixers wish list for June's draft herehere, and here. 11 of the 13 will play at least one game in the NCAA Tournament, a perfect setting for every Sixers fan to feast their eyes on potential future Sixers.

As college basketball comes to an end, and the NBA Playoffs creep closer it will probably be a while before the Liberty Ballers crew do any new prospect write-ups, and these are obviously the last games most of these prospects will play before entering the NBA. After the jump is one final look at my wish list, the top 5 defensive rebounders of the group, and the tip times of the prospects of interest.

Enjoy the remainder of the opening Thursday and Friday, win your office pools, and mount your Kennenth Faried FatHeads. MADNESS!

Sixers Draft 2011: Five More College Prospects

With the Sixers in the midst of a playoff run and push for the sixth seed (only half a game behind the Knicks), the NBA draft is likely among the last things Sixers fans are thinking about. However; if you're an obsessive draft freak like myself, there's never a time not to be thinking about the draft.

As the NCAA tournament creeps closer, things are beginning to heat up in the college basketball universe. A Saturday stuffed with conference games, tourney implications, and prospects, paired with the off-days for both the Knicks and Sixers makes now a great time to familiarize yourself with a few more prospects the Sixers could potentially take in June's draft.

My personal wish list consists of eight prospects, ranging from late-lottery to second round. Brief descriptions of the prospects and how they'd fit with the Sixers can be found here and here. Make the jump as I add five more college prospects to my wish list.

Sixers' Draft 2011: Adding Prospects to the Wish List

Two months ago I briefly mentioned five college prospects who I'd like to see the Sixers draft this June, given current need and projected draft position. Since then, two prospects – John Henson and Jordan Hamilton – have likely played themselves into the lottery, decreasing their chances of landing with the Sixers. With Henson and Hamilton playing beyond the Sixers reach, I'm adding a few more prospects who should be available in the late teens or second round to my early wish list.

I don't claim to be a great evaluator of college talent, nor do I watch enough games to be considered an expert. Our resident draft expert, Derek, who watches an obscene amount of college basketball and moonlights at Draft Express, will periodically produce in-depth articles on draft prospects well into the off-season, so stay tuned for those.

With that said, below are three new prospects I'm adding to my imaginary wish list of John Henson, Jordan Hamilton, Kenneth Faried, Tyler Honeycutt, and Aaric Murray.

NBA Draft '11: College Prospect Thread 1/29

After the ugliness that occurred inside the Wells Fargo Center last night, why not get your mind on something a little more optimistic? Scouting potential new members for the Sixers is never something that gets me down and is actually scientifically proven to raise spirits.

It's been a while since we've had one of these as the NFL Playoffs and a few less than stellar Saturday match-ups got in the way. Now that conference play is in full swing, we can really start to get a good sense of which prospects tickle our respective fancies. That being said, let's get to it McNulty.

Georgetown at Villanova - 12:00 PM, ESPN (Austin Freeman, Mouphtaou Yarou, Cory Fisher, Maalik Wayns)

Xavier at Richmond - 12:00 PM, ESPN2 (Justin Harper, Tu Holloway)

Florida at Mississippi State - 12:00 PM, CBSSports.com (Kenny Boynton, Vernon Macklin, Patric Young, Not Renardo Sidney)

More chances to check out some potential prospects after the jump.

Scouting report: Derrick Williams, PF, Arizona Wildcats

The Sixers may not be on there way to a top pick, but that doesn't mean the crew here at LibertyBallers isn't all geeked up for the draft.  The draft is, and always will be, one of my primary points of interest in this wonderful world of basketball, and the rest of the crew here feels the same way.  Even without a top pick, the Sixers pick will hardly be irrelevant.  Think a 16th'ish pick is worthless?  Ask yourself that question with a straight face as the Sixers make Jrue Holiday the cornerstone of their franchise.

Each week I will post scouting reports on 1-2 potential draft prospects.  My goal (starting next week, this will be the only report released this week) is to release a scouting report every Tuesday and Friday, right up through the end of the NCAA tournaments.  Each of these posts will contain a link to previous scouting reports, as well as my place on my hypothetical Sixers big board I would have these prospects on if the draft were held today.  As time goes by, we will continue releasing Big Boards and Mock Drafts as well.  We may even attend the lotterycombinedraft workouts and draft again this year.

I'm going to be skipping out obvious top 10 picks, as it appears the Sixers will be playing themselves out of a top pick.  The selecting players will likely be focused on big men, but wings who fit our current personnel will also be included.  Point guards may even be included if their talent level is far and away above his contemporaries, although obviously point guard is the least of the Sixers positional needs.  After the NCAA season ends, I will go back and do some scouting reports on some lesser ranked players as guys the Sixers can target in the second round (or late first round if they can get an additional pick).  Right now I want to focus my attention on players the Sixers could be looking at in the first round.

I'm not going to write a scouting report for a player whom I haven't seen at least half of his minutes played, but usually they will be much higher.  Reports will generally be in the same format: summary, followed by strengths, weaknesses, a must improve category, and an outlook section.

Enough rambling, let's get to the report.

It's time to check up on the five (plus Jared Sullinger) college basketball prospects I envision being realistic options for the Sixers in this year's draft, given both need and draft position.

Here's a link via statsheet.com of all six prospects stats in a side-by-side comparison. My two favorite guys – Jordan Hamilton from Texas and Kenneth Faried from Moorehead State – continue to do what they do well, shoot and rebound, respectively. Hamilton is averaging 20 points per game with percentages of .458/.412/.736, and an offensive rating of 121. Faried is averaging 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks, is first in the nation in DEB%, and fourth in OREB%.

Two nifty charts – also via statsheet.com – after the jump.

NBA Draft '11: College Prospect Thread 12/18

This is something that Jordan started last week, causing him to build a shrine dedicated to Morehead State forward Kenneth Faried (very similar to this).

College basketball has been one of my greatest loves since the early 2000 Maryland Terrapin squads containing the likes of Steve Blake, Chris Wilcox, Lonny Baxter, Byron Mouton, Drew Nicholas and some guy named Juan Dixon. I know for a fact that Mike shares this passion with me and could probably name every single Division 1 player off the top of his head. Derek is right along with us, although he doesn't count because he works for Draft Express (sellout!). We're still working on Jordan.

There are some excellent games on today with tons of NBA talent in the mix. As I'm typing this, Philadelphia native Marcus Morris is rock chalkin' his way to a possible lottery selection against USC on ESPN. Morris' hotshot freshman teammate Josh Selby is making his debut in this one (projected lottery pick as well).

Hit the jump for a list of games and prospects (in no particular order) you can check out today. If I missed anyone, post his name in the comments as someone to watch.

Sixers Draft 11: College Prospects Update

Top 100 Prospects - Draft Express

Top 100 Prospects - ESPN

-------------------------------------------------

Last weekend I wrote about five lesser known College Basketball prospects who may fit well with the Sixers. Courtesy of StatSheet.com here is a side-by-side comparison of their stats. I've added Jared Sullinger's stats to the comparison as well.

Much like the occasional comparison of Turner, Cousins, Favors and Johnson I'll be updating posting statistical updates on these five players + Sullinger throughout the college season. I have a feeling that one of these guys will be wearing the Sixers red, white and blue next season.

Make the jump for two cool charts via Stat Sheet.
