While Ed Stefanski wouldn't mention any names, it's clear that the Sixers desperately need a shooter. They are last in the NBA in 3-point shooting accuracy at 29.1 percent this season. That's even worse than last season, when they were last at 31.7 percent.

Stefanski wouldn't say if he's shopping Andre Miller, or Samuel Dalembert, who might be less attractive because he has two years and $23.6 million left on his deal, in addition to a 15 percent trade kicker. But Stefanski did say he has been talking with teams about possible trades.

"We're on the phones a lot, learning what other teams are looking for and seeing if there's anything out there that makes sense for us," Stefanski said. -- The News Journal

Brand update

Power forward Elton Brand remained in Philadelphia to rehabilitate after suffering a dislocated right shoulder. Brand is doing well, interim coach Tony DiLeo said.
"He's coming along great," DiLeo said. "He's been shooting the ball, and his range of motion is great."

Speights is playing great on offense. No surprise there. But to be a better defensive force, he needs to learn to try to deny his opponents good post-up position. It's not possible to deny them the ball totally, but forcing them to catch the ball a step or three beyond where they want it is the first line of defense.

Check it out; it's a good read. I'm thrilled that Speights is getting the attention he's getting. It makes me feel less homer-ish when I get so excited about him. But while this article acknowledges Speights upside, the author also notes his lack of defense.

"I first saw Speights a couple of years ago when he was a college freshman, and couldn't believe his touch around the basket. And now, despite being on the 'playing time see-saw,' he's hitting 49.3 percent of his shots.
And as of today, he leads all rookies in player efficiency rating by a bigger margin than the No. 2 rook (Mayo) holds over the next 10 rookies. Speights is still a liability on defense, and his motor can stall from time to time, but his offensive talent is enormous."--David Thorpe, ESPN Rookie "expert".

My advice. Don't get attached to a certain player. It happened to me with Oden, Durant and Acie Law and the Sixers got none of 'em and are probably better off for it, but you wouldn't know that by my reaction after months of rooting for one of those 3 players.
