what's the argument against

i'm pretty sure that i heard two things during the first half of the clippers game. the first thing was that the sixers are 27th in the league in scoring. the second was that both marreese speights and louwill had scored 10 points in each of the first 3 games of the road trip, all of which were losses.

i'm on record as saying that this team will only go as far as lou, marreese, and thad will take it, so my question is this: what would this team lose by starting all three?

as far as i can tell, iggy isn't able to carry this team. andre isn't able to carry this team. sammy d, good willie, and reggie evans aren't able to carry this team. since this configuration isn't working, why not hand the reigns over to 3 guys on the rise, each of whom has shown flashes of being very proficient scorers.

Low Field Goal Percentage Plagues Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers is having a disappointing season. The team is playing badly with a record of 7 wins and 10 losses. Expectations were high going into the season especially with the acquisition of Elton Brand this past summer. But, the team is not playing well together. Their shooting is one of the main problems and has been all season.

The Philadelphia 76ers shooting woes have plagued them all season. The 76ers as a team are shooting an unimpressive .43 FG percentage. They are currently ranked 24th at field goal percentage in the NBA. This is one of the main reasons why the team is not winning alot of games this year. Most of the best teams in the NBA have an excellent shooting percentage such as the Cleveland Cavs, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns and LA Lakers. All of these winning teams are in the top ten in the NBA in FG percentage. Shooting percentage is extremely important if you want to win alot of games.

There are several players on the 76ers that have bad shooting percentages. Louis Williams and Andre Iguodala have horrendous shooting numbers for the season. For example, Andre Iguodala’s FG% is .398 and Lou Williams’s FG% is .342. Both Williams and Iguodala are struggling even more at three point shooting. To illustrate, Andre Iguodala’s 3P% is .256 and Lou Williams’s 3P% is .205. If their numbers don't improve they will keep losing close games and if will be tough for the team to improve.

There are a few ways the 76ers could improve their shooting. They could improve their shot selection and force shots less because that is part of the problem. For instance, Andre Iguodala still seems to be loss in the offense and he can't seem to find good shots within the flow of the offense. The 76ers could also add a excellent shooter to the team and that could help with their shooting woes. There are alot of good shooters the 76ers could go after like Ben Gordon, Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak, Jason Kapano, JJ Redick or Anthony Parker.

If the 76ers can figure out how to improve through shooting the team will improve tremendously. They would rise from a mediocre team to one of the best in the NBA. This won't be a easy problem to solve. But once it is solved I think the 76ers will then finally play to their true potential. And if this problem isn't solved this will be a long season because the 76ers low field goal percentage is really hurting them.

Hello everyone

It's a pleasure to meet everyone. We all remember the thrilling excitement of signing Elton Brand back in August? I know on RealGM, I and many others discussed with Sixers insiders and it looked like we gave up on Brand because of the supposed deal with the Clippers. Then Brand gave us a chance and you know the rest.

I was stunned and happy.(Well, I actually wanted Josh Smith but once I got a glimspe of what Brand has done throughout his career I was hooked). Killer mid-range jumpshot. Excellent rebounding and blocking techniques, It was only because of the Clippers(Do they even have fans or a game plan?) that this beast has been hidden from the NBA. I assumed(and I'm sure we all did) that Elton Brand would open up driving lanes for our perimeter players. This was big for Andre Iguodala, who can't create his own lane let alone a shot. But I assumed Miller and Thad would benefit big time from this as well. I saw a half-court offense that could be very deadly in the league all of a sudden. I saw a running game that was about to be enhanced downlow. I saw major support for Dalembert. His one weakness was dumb fouls. But those would dissappear with Elton Brand helping him main the paint. I saw our tremendous perimeter defense backed up with amazing front-court depth. Reggie Evans and Speights are too different bigs. But they both bring a style of basketball that would help us win. We signed Rush and Marshall and at first, these guys struggled. But we saw in the regular season, these guys can knock it down big time. I was pumped.

Then I remembered: Him. Maurice Cheeks. I sware, if it wasn't for the fact that he is a player's coach, he wouldn't get a job anywhere else in the league again. Forget having an offensive system in place. Let's first work on the definition of an open shot damn it. Or how about defense? We used to play aggressive man-up ball and press. As a result, Iguodala and Miller combined to hamper teams for 3 SPG and led the running attack. With Brand/Dalember together, this should be a lethal combination resulting in contested jumpshots and even more running chances.

It's not that Brand can't run and that we can't run with Brand. It's that when you don't contest the perimeter, you can attack the paint and when that happens, even a million Brands won't save you. Let's not get to Rush and Marshall. Combined they are shooting 50 percent or more from the 3 pt arc. But they barely get any if at all playing time. Why? Because our coach cannot sub to fill in weaknesses. Rush/Marshall have trouble defending? Fine, put in guys who can. Put Iguodala next to Rush/Marshall. Thad can shoot the 3 ball, you can play small ball MO with Iggy, Thad, Miller, Daly in the lineup.

Conclusion: We have a coach that could be outcoached by a JV headcoach and everyone on this blog. He needs to be fired. NOW. 7-7 or whatever, we're much better then that and if he's around long enough, we're about to be much worse.

Philadelphia 76ers should choose Thaddeus Young over Andre Iguodala

<!-- TOKEN_1227575047845_TOKEN -->I’m happy that the Philadelphia 76ers has plenty of young talent. They have Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young and Andre Iguodala. All of these young players are going to have good careers. But, the 76ers are 7-6 and their playing like a mediocre basketball team. The 76ers need to choose Thaddeus Young over Andre Iguodala so that the team can become better.

via www.nba.com

Thaddeus Young is having a great year. He is very athletic, a great dunker and a good scorer. His game has improved so much that he will probably win the NBA’s most improved player award. He is even leading the 76ers in scoring so far at 16.2 points per game. That is double his rookie scoring average of 8.3 points per game. His potential is unlimited and he is only 20 years old. Everyone is surprised by his vast improvement. He has blossomed as a player this year.

However, Andre Iguodala is struggling this year. He is having one of the worst years of his career. For example, he has a .38 field goal percentage and .23 three point percentage. Last season he had a .45 field goal percentage and .32 three point percentage. The plan going into the season was for him to be the primary scoring option or at least the second scoring option. His 12.8 points per game makes him only the fourth best scorer on the 76ers. He can’t figure out how to continually find scoring opportunities and is forcing most of his shots.

Therefore, the 76ers need to trade Andre Iguodala and keep Thaddeus young. Thaddeus Young is younger then Andre Iguodala and is continually becoming better. A few years from now Thaddeus Young possibly could be one of the best small forwards in the NBA. If the 76ers trade Andre Iguodala they could get another shooter or a good young point guard. These are certainly some of their current needs. By trading Iguodala the team will play more cohesively and that will help make them one of the better teams in the eastern conference. Thaddeus Young and Elton Brand are already the number one and two scoring options on the 76ers. And Andre Iguodala isn’t going to be happy being the fourth scoring option so trade Iguodala to make the 76ers an improved team.

Fun With Point Guards and Statistics

Not so much fun, but long and technical.

I didn't have anything to do at my job today, so I decided to revisit a statistic I created about a year and a half ago, but updated somewhat. I thought about this today because I wondered how good Andre Miller is compared to the other point guards of the league. I'm a huge fan of Miller's and I would be open to the Sixers resigning him after the year ended. So without further ado: What I wrote some time ago, with updated statistics and analysis:

Clearly, the hardest position on the basketball floor to evaluate is point guard. This is so for two reasons. First, the point guard is expected to demonstrate intangible qualities, like leadership and playmaking. But also, it is because the goals for a point guard seem to contradict each other. To explain what I mean by this, first I'll talk about two power forwards with exactly the same skill set, except Forward A is a much better rebounder than Forward B. While we would expect the two forwards to have similar scoring averages, Forward A's would probably be a little better than Forward B's. That is because A would collect offensive rebounds and instantly have a shot attempt available, while B would not be able to receive the ball. Also, on a more indirect note, Forward A would collect more defensive rebounds, leading to more possessions all around for his team. But through this example, we see that rebounds work in concert with scoring average. But, point guards do not rebound. Instead, their primary evaluative statistic, aside from scoring, is assists. Assists work against the individual's scoring average. If a player has an opportunity to pass the ball or shoot the ball, the team may score either way, but the player's scoring average will only improve if he shoots. A basket, though, is a basket, regardless of who makes it. Thus, when evaluating point guards, assists and scoring have to be treated equally.
Points per game is the most basic way to measure a player's productivity, but as previously stated, point guards need to have their passing evaluated as well. Thus, to calculate how many points per game the point guard directly creates, the guard's points-per game must be added to a weighted assist total.
So, how do we determine the weighted assist coefficient? It's tempting to say that each basket is worth two points, so each assist that leads up to the basket must be worth two points as well. However, this does not take into account three point baskets. When taking three pointers into account, the average basket in the 2005/06 NBA season was worth 2.175 points. By that, we can conclude that each assist should be worth 2.175 points as well. The equation is as follows: Points created by player= Points per game + 2.175(Assists per game). Are we done? Not yet.
We forgot about turnovers. Peewee coaches have been stressing ball control for years, but these showboating NBA players just care about razzle-dazzle. Hence, we need to take turnovers into the equation. Conceptually, it should seem obvious that an assist is worth more than a turnover, regardless of what coaches say. That is because an assist always leads to a made basket (natch), while turnovers do not always prevent a made basket. But, we have to assign some value to a turnover, so how do we do it?
Magic. Nah, what we need to do is look at the total possessions a team has in a game. Then we see how many points the team scores, and finally how many turnovers it has committed. These are the only three numbers we need. First, we subtract out turnovers from possessions. These possessions are 'wasted'; the team could not have scored from these. What we are left with are the amount of possessions the team could have scored with. We must divide points scored by eligible possessions. Thus, what we have is points scored per eligible possession. This, theoretically, is the amount of points the team scores per eligible possession, and the amount it would score on all possessions if no turnovers occurred. To get total possessions, add turnovers and field goal attempts and subtract offensive rebounds. This is because a possession can end in either a shot attempt or a turnover (or free throw attempts, but we'll get to that a little later) and offensive rebounds increase shot attempts and turnovers, but they don't add possessions. They just prolong possessions. This part is not some agreed upon fact, just a judgement call I made. For the 2007/08 season, a team scored 1.42 points per eligible possession. (The average team scored 99.9 points per game, had 84.41 possessions per game, and averaged 14.11 turnovers per game). To conclude, a turnover is worth 1.42 points a piece.
Now, we have all we need to calculate a point guard's ability to directly influence scoring. The equation is as follows: Points per game + 2.175(Assists per game) - 1.42(Turnovers per game) = Scoring directly influenced by point guards (or any player really, just that this metric works best with the floor generals). But we can do more with this. Since some players play more minutes than others, we can equalize the minutes. Say hypothetically, what would each player's contribution be if he played 40 min. a game at the same level he played his current minutes at. Or, since some teams play at a faster pace, artifically increasing his numbers, how would he do playing at a standard pace. Now, I'm not saying players will perform at the same level for increased minutes or a decreased pace, but it aids in comparison. And remember I said I'd get to free throws? Well, here I am. Free throws are difficult to add in because of the different ways free throws occur. They can occur without interrupting possession (think "And One" Calls), after the defense is over the limit, and so on. I haven't found a place or site that differentiates how free throws occur. Thus, I excluded them altogether. If you think about it, most free throws result because of a foul during a shot. If that is so, it is listed as a shot attempt, whether it goes in or not, and so those free throw occurrences are included in possessions per game. The free throws which aren't included in possessions are the ones where the defense commits a foul after reaching the limit. In those situations, the point guard hasn't really done anything anyway (except maybe draw the foul, in which case he shoots free throws), and so those 'fouled' possessions are excluded from the formula altogether. This is not a perfect solution, I understand. But it is the 'fairest' one I could come up with.

So here's how the point guards compared for the 07/08 season. The age and team are for last year. "DP" is Direct Points, what I created. "DP/40" is Direct Points per 40 min and "DP/40Pace" is Direct Points per 40 minutes divided by the pace factor for the player's team and then multiplied by 100 so it's not a crazy fraction.

Rank Player Age Team DP DP/40 DP/40Pace

    1 Paul 22 NO 42.78 45.51 50.07

...........................................................................................

   19 A.Miller 31 PHI 28.46 30.93 33.26

I'm sorry, I thought about listing all 48 players I ran the analysis for here, but that seriously would have taken all day, cuz I would have to have manually formatted the entire list. I wish I could import a spreadsheet onto SBN. If anyone knows how, please tell me (assuming you've read this far). Anyway, Miller falls into the middle of "2nd-tier PGs", with Raymond Felton, Ramon Sessions, and Earl Watson surprisingly ahead of him. The fading Jason Kidd is also ahead of him in this second tier group. Miller is ahead of Mo Williams, Jameer Nelson, Mike Bibby, Gilbert Arenas (though Arenas only played like 19 games), and Kirk Hinrich. Rebounding is not taken into account, which helps explain Kidd's diminshed value. Sessions' place ahead of Miller and some others is explained away by a small sample size. He only played 26.5 minutes a game in 17 games.

Anyway, Miller did not do as well as I thought he would have. While I don't think I would put him in the 'elite' category, which is a somewhat arbitrary class, I would have listed him as the best of the 2nd tier. On the surface, his stats would agree with me. 17 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.5 TOs. What gives? Well first, the assist seems to be making a comeback. I remember years when only Jason Kidd would log over 10 of them a game. Now, 4 players (Nash, Kidd, D. Williams, and Paul) topped 10. And Miller's 6.9 only tied him for 13th in the league (and two more players had 6.8 assists). Second, while Miller's PPG look impressive, of the guards I looked at, Miller was 11th in the league in minutes played, so while he put up good numbers, it took him a relatively long time to do it. While that's not too bad, when compared to numbers in an equal amount of time, Miller's performance looks less than stellar.

Conclusions: Miller is not as 'unexpendable' as I originally thought. While I still think it behooves the team to resign him, this has a lot to do with the fact that the team doesn't have good replacements waiting in line. He's not elite, but average, and given his age, I would not expect him to be a quality PG much longer. A two or three year deal seems like a worthwhile gamble for the team, assuming it makes a reasonable effort, either throught the draft or some other means, to secure a 'point guard of the future' type. While I'm not saying the metric I've shown you today is by any means the end all of point guard evaluative measures, it represents my best effort to create a metric that takes into account both the scoring and passing function of a point guard. Thank you for reading this far (if indeed you have)

Allen Iverson Traded to Pistons?

Reports are leaking out that the Nuggets and Pistons completed a major trade today. Allen Iverson will go from the Nuggets to the Pistons and Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess will head to the Nuggets.

The pistons were supposedly going to 'shake things up' after another loss in the conference finals last season, but didn't do anything major in the off season. I guess this is the beginning of the shake up.

Personally, on the court, I think the Nuggets got the better end of the deal and this is the beginning of a 'white flag' of sorts in Detroit (that I felt was unnecessary)...getting this deal done early means the Pistons will have a chance to move Iverson (an expiring deal) again at the trade deadline this year.

I personally think this makes the pistons less of a threat in the east, not more.

Looking for "Alpha" Testers

So I'm working on a rather large all encompassing project for a web site about basketball but right now I'm working on a small portion of it, a basketball 'pick em' game - it's pretty simple right now - just pick the winners - whoever gets the most games right wins (nothing right now, sorry)...i'm in the process of getting the functionality ready to go (even if it won't look all laid out pretty, i'm worried about getting it to work first) so people can make picks and I can figure out the scoring module (have an idea but i need people to participate to get it right.

I only have a few places I can go to find testers plus I want to limit the testing...if anyone is interested in testing please let me know here - when it's ready to go (hopefully sometime this week or by next monday at the latest) i'll provide a link for people to go to sign up and make their picks.

Thanks in advance

andre looks...old

i love andre miller. he's been the catalyst for this team's turnaround, and he's easily been their best player since getting here. he's done everything that's been needed, whether it be scoring, selling out on defense, or playing SG alongside louwill, he's done it.

but he's slowed. he's not as quick to jump out and get a hand in the face of a shooter. he's not as quick to get past a perimeter defender and into the lane.

i hope that it's just early season apathy, but miller has struggled with back pain in the past, and he is...shit, he's only 32. he's in his walk year, so even if his career is now on the downside, he's just a $10 million expiring contract.

this team goes as andre goes, so i'm hoping he bounces back, but if he's not healthy, or if he's just in decline, i'd like to see louwill given a chance to start, preferably sooner, rather than later, so as to have a clearer picture of what this team will look like should miller decide to play somewhere else.

What can the Sixers REALLY do this season?

What do u guys think the Sixers can do this season. Now i might just be blabbing on as a 76ers fan but i really think we can go all the wy in a increasingly strong Eastern Conference. The East isnt as much as a joke it used to be. The Celtics and Cavs will give us a run for our money i think, the Pistons are aging and wont be as dominante and the New Orlean Hornets i think are a team that will suprise a lot of people

My predictions

Celtics

Cavs

Sixer

Pistons

N.O.

Raptors

yada yada yada

I think you can mess around with the top 3 a little and i wouldnt object to putting the Hornets in the top for and throwing out the Pistons. What do my fello Liberty Ballers think

Recap of tonight's game

This isn't worthy enough to be a front-pager. I listened to tonight's game on the league pass audio and we broke the 300 comment barrier on the thread which was amazing. I must say our radio play-by-play guy (Tom McGinnis?) is absolutely money. I've never listened to him before, but thoroughly enjoyed it tonight. To sum it up, we had a lead the entire game and we blew the lead in the fourth with a lineup including Donyell "5 threes and 4 Steals" Marshall, Royal Ivey and Kareem Rush on the floor. I keep telling myself that it's just pre-season. It's just pre-season. These records don't count. Obviously Comcast and NBA.com know they don't count. Comcast won't show games and NBA.com won't even put up highlightsh but here's what I learned from the audio.

-Speights is still a rookie. He started for Elton Brand and struggled on the offensive end. He was a monster on D and on the glass though.

-Donyell can still play. 5 threes and 4 steals in limited action. Is this 2003 or 2008?

-Lou is money. 15-8-7, but three turnovers. He can't hang onto the ball this pre-season.

-Willie Green only played 8 minutes. Did I read that right? There's still hope!

-Thad dropped another cool 13.

-Cleveland plays this instead of "We Will Rock You" to get their fans pumped. I heard it with my own ears.

-Pre-season sucks!!!!

Fantasy basketball

Hey guys me and my friends are doing a Fantasy basketball league and still need about 4 more teams. We currently do not have a draft date set and we will try to work with everyones schedules to choose a draft date. This is just for fun and while we all are competitive it is more about having fun. It is a free league through ESPN and is a points based league. If you are interested please email me from my profile and i will invite you.

Raymond Felton

Chad Ford writes for ESPN as their basketball 'insider'. Fords insight and insider information has always struck me as bollox for lack of a better word. In a long rambling poorly organized article regarding 'name' players that could be traded early in the season there was an interesting mention. (This article posits that because it was quiet in the off season it means lots of trades will happen during the season, I'm not sure how the corollary works, but that's what he said).

Anyway, buried in this group of players who have no interest to me coming to the sixers is the name Raymond Felton. Now I know Felton is no great shakes so far in the NBA (playing for one of the worst run franchises in the NBA, 'youth or not') but he plays point guard and he's currently better at point guard than any 'point guard' on the sixers roster (I do not believe that Louis Williams is or ever will be a point guard). Felton is an RFA after this year so obtaining him for a one year audition shouldn't cost too much and Larry Brown loves those players who play the right way, and you know he's calling the shots in Charlotte so you might be able to get Felton for a relative cheapness.

Anyone interested in that?

Welcome to SBN

Hello from Japan. Glad to see that the Sixers finally have a blog up on SBN. I am a Philly native, but I have to confess I am a Blazers fan. I used to like the 6ers in the Barkley, Hawkins, Dawkins and, of course, Bol, era, but fell in love with the Flyers and saw the Sixers as the other team that used the spectrum/center. I moved to Portland and found out the town was so big into basketball and they managed to root for the team the right way. I love the way that we treat our football team and stadium (though the Vet had the best memories of that for me), but I just don't think that stuff belongs in the NBA arena. I still love the Flyers and Eagles, and if I were to chose a 2nd NBA team, it would be the Sixers.

In fact, that's kind of what I did. Over at Blazers Edge (the Blazers SBN sister site), in an effort to get more involved with other teams and extend the olive branch, people have volunteered to become ambassadors for other SBN sites. I picked the Sixers, but they didn't have a site. Until now. So I welcome all the crap I will take for switching teams (actually I would never switch, but I really didn't have a team for a decade or so, and I still don't recognize baseball as a major sport no matter where I am. Again, fire away) and hope that we can talk some ball together. Since reading the blog, I do have to know about Speights. I'm sure just asking won't be enough, and I'll be around enough to pick up why you guys are so jazzed about this guy. Honestly, I think the Sixers and the Blazers will be duking it out in the finals in a few seasons if things stay on the up and up for both of these teams.

Thaddeus and Jason Smtih extended

Money

Philadelphia, Pa. – October 13, 2008 – Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has exercised the third-year options on the contracts of Jason Smith and Thaddeus Young.

This isn't surprising news or anything, but it's still good. The suddenly emerging stud, Thad had his salary of 2.9 milion picked up for the 2010-2011 and the injured Jason Smith also had his 2.1 million dollar option picked up.

Obviously, I love it. Chalk it up as another beautiful move by "The Greatest GM on the Planet", but I hate to say it, even Billy *gulp* King would've gotten this done. Thad is quickly becoming a stud. The dude just turned 20 years old and already has a very impressive season under his belt, including some quality minutes against a championship team in the playoffs. Then there's this pre-season, where he's playing with a new sense of confidence and showing us that he's ready to take that "next step". This pre-season Thad is averaging 14 ppg on 46% shooting, which is solid, but the key stat is 50% from downtown. If he can consistently stretch the defense, the problem all the "experts" say we have, isn't much of a problem anymore.

And Jason Smith. It's a shame he got hurt because I was really starting to expect him to be a contributer this season. Unlike Thad or our first-rounder this year, Speights, Smith really doesn't have the potential be an all-star. That's fine though; not everyone can be an all-star. What Smith can be, is a very good role player on a championship caliber team and that's exactly what I think he'll be when he returns.

Ed Stefanski=Money.

Your guide to a dope FanPost

FanPosts. If you have an opinion on the Sixers or something Basketball related, this is your chance to be heard. Would you like to write 3,000 words on why Willie Green is still on the team? This is the place to do it. FanPosts are published on the sidebar of Liberty Ballers for everyone to read and comment and even recommend (I'll touch on that in a second). Who knows, if your FanPost is out of this world, I might publish it on as a main story. That's something to stride for.

Here are some things that make a good FanPost:

1. New Material-If someone already posted a FanPost on a topic, it's probably not a good idea for you to do the same. For example, if someone has a FanPost titled "Samuel Dalembert breaks block record!" please don't post Did you see "Sammy D break the record?". There are some exceptions. Some topics require multiple opinions, like thoughts on a certain game or the draft.

2. Looking at a topic from a different angle- Most Sixers' fans hate Willie Green and think Ed Stefanski is the greatest GM on planet earth (I'm part of them), but if you want to look at it from a different angle and give reasons why Willie G is the best guard on the team, go for it. Just don't bust out a "Willie Green sucks so hard!" post without any factual analysis to back it up.

3. Comedy-If your FanPost is funny, everyone will like it. Just make sure it's funny.

4. Spelling and Grammar- Know won likes two reed bad righting.

5. Thought-provoking topics

Guidelines:

1. Do not attack me, Liberty Ballers or any member of the blog.

2. Use the "recommend" feature, so the incredible FanPosts can rise to the top of the list and not get overshadowed by other FanPosts.

3. Don't post about your date last Saturday night or the last underground film you watched. Keep it Sixers or NBA-related please.

4. Enjoy yourself.
