The sixers roster is shaping up just right for "the plan;" young, fast, athletic, players. Develop them over the next few years and, in time, become serious contenders. The priority for next season is to maximally develop talent, not win the most games. This season is an investment in player development.
And that’s why I’d like to see the sixers add an element to the team that isn’t there yet. A lineup of MCW, NN, Thad (for as long as he’s with us) and pick your next two or three from KJ, Wroten, Hollis or a surprise, and you have a roster that’s going to get banged up. Big physical players are going to have a field day using their strength to knock our guys around. We need to protect these guys so they can get stronger and develop their talents without getting bruised and battered night-in, night-out.
A team like the Hawks must outweigh the sixers by over a ton. For the protection of our players we need someone who can bang with the bangers.
A few free agents could play this role. Bret Brown will know DeJuan Blair from his time in San Antonio. If he thinks he can fit into the team culture, he’d fit the bill. And, dare I say it, Elton Brand is a free agent and could absorb some of the banging. Or, my favorite possibility, Carlos Boozer.
Jeremy Lin would have been fun on this team but Lin and a first round pick from the Rockets is less valuable to "the plan" than Boozer and a first round pick from the Bulls. We don’t need a player like Lin in order for our players to develop. I don’t like Boozer, but we need a player like Boozer to pick up some of the physical side of the game.
Our guys will get stronger and the addition of a 7’0 Joel Embiid with a playing weight above his current 250 will help. But this year’s roster, as it stands, is thin and light. I’d love to see us add bulk and a draft pick in a trade with the Bulls. It serves the plan.
