As a lifelong and hardcore SIXERS fan, I think I can speak for a lot of us out here, so I want to start by saying, while I might have wished for a different approach to the draft the other night, we understand the moves you made on Thursday. We are on board for the long haul, and we appreciate your steadfast strategic appraoch. Heck of a job so far.
But a new season starts in four short months, and we'd like to see as much commitment to trying to win now from the front office as we see on the floor. The fans deserve it, the players deserves it, and the coach deserves it too.
You've done a great job in cleaning house, getting picks back squandered by previous regimes, and have brought in a lot of young talent. We love the focus on length, athleticism, and defense. The uptempo offense is fun to watch, and will be even more fun when we have all the pieces to execute it.
Summer league is going to be a revelation, with Jackson and McRae, and McDaniels, and Grant, and Noel, and all the undrafted rookies trying to make an impression. Hope you are sending Henry Sims and Hollis Thompson too. Want a chance to see Nerlens play the PF next to Sims, so we can start to envision a little bit what the twin towers might look like here in Philly. And everyone wants to see what's kind of strides Thompson has made over the off season.
At the same time, while summer league gets underway, so too does free agency. We have a tom of cap room - I'm not asking you to spend all of it, just some of it. Go after a legitimate SG, and don't be too cheap about it either. Makes a run at Gordon Hayward or Chandler Parsons...both are young enough and skilled enough to fit long term too. Or a guy like Shaun Livingston or Patty Miills. There are others out there too - but is has to be someone who can step in and be a starter, because we are one starter short right now even counting on McDaniels. And one more veteran PF, 1 year deal with an option, just a guy who can board and play D, Kris Humphries or someone like that. One guy to start and another to come off the bench. That's all we ask. $15-16 million tops for both. Because next summer Richardson is coming off the books, and likely Thad too, so you'll get your cap room back right away.
This makes sense on every level. It will give you some vets to show all the young guys the ropes in the NBA. You'll make the $15MM back just by having 9000 fans at the games instead of 2 or 3000. It will show a commitment to the coach and the players, and let them play for a season with at least a shot at the playoffs, not another year of constant losing. It will show a team on the rise when next years free agent crop starts to think about destinations. It may encourage your foreign players to come over sooner. If you sneak into the 7th or 8th seed, it will give your young floor general a little playoff experience for the future. And if we do sneak into the playoffs, the pick you have to send to Boston won't be in the lottery anyway.
And it will energize the fan base, and help them to accept and believe in the future you are building. When Embiid and Saric and Milic and others come aboard, you will not be starting all the way from the bottom, you will already be a few steps up the ladder. We believe in you, Sam. And in the future you are building. Now give us something to believe in for the present.
