Full faith in Hinkie remains constant, and confident he is as prepared as humanly possible to make the right decisions Thursday. But in the end, I'm back where I started. I want Wiggins. I, want Wiggins. I want, Wiggins.
Heres the thing. I like that he wants to be #1. He's made it no secret that has always been his goal. I think he realizes now he's been slapped with the label of lacks killer instinct. And I think he's out to prove he's still the best prospect since Lebron. His behavior, interviews, attitude just seem like a man in a mission since the end of the college season. He seems to want it the most, and I like that. As for Exum, by most accounts you couldn't ask for a better head on an 18 year olds shoulders. I hate that Jabari is still overweight if that is true. You have millions of dollars on the line and you can't stay in shape? That's literally your only job right now, I like Embiid, but I'm backing off the possibility if picking him at 3. Love to get him with our second pick if we can. I think it comes down to this for hinkie now:
1. If Exum is in the ballpark of Wiggins on our board, we sit tight at 3, see who falls, take them, and then have deals in place to move up as far as we can from 10, and maybe steal Embiid with pick 2 or Gordon/Vonleh/Randle. Not worth giving up assets if you feel like the player available to you will be at the same level.
2. If wiggins is significantly above Exum on our board, use Thad, 3, and 10 to go get him. And whatever else save (hopefully) mcw and noel. This is one of the kinds of scenarios hinkie acquires assets for! And nearly all of his moves thus far have been about the future and acquiring more assets. But when the time is right and you feel like your man is in front of you, do what you have to do. Use those chips you worked hard for for a moment like this. Do I wanna give up 10? Hell no! But if Wiggins is a star 5 years from now, and we decided we wouldn't draft him because we really wanted to grab another starter with our 2nd lottery pick... THAT IS A DECISION WE WILL SORELY REGRET. No one will care that we don't Gordon/randle/Vonleh, because Sam will already have filled that role perhaps a couple times over thru future draft, FA or trade. Perhaps even by trading back into the first round of this draft.
I am squarely sitting on scenario 2 as we come down the homestretch. Now it's not like the world will end if hinkie guesses wrong on Thursday. We will recover and still be an up and comer. The franchise is in great shape, and there is more than one way to build a contender. But I think there's something special about doing it organically, homegrown with the draft. Also tends to last longer too. And this is likely our best chance to draft a star. Sure, we'll probably be here next year, but who knows what pick and how good that class will be.
If you believe in Wiggins, and I do, do what it takes to go get him. Yes, we're building, and we'll continue. But if you think you've got a shot at someone with top 5 in the league potential, time to put those assets to good use. Complimentary talents will always be available, transcendent talents will not.
