As if it wasn't stressful enough 48 hours ago, the Embiid injury has turned this pivotal night in Sixers history into full blown anxiety attack for fans. Even Die hard team chillers have to admit they are a little wigged out right now see what I did there. Was just sitting there happily watching a DVR'd Phils game on Thursday, feeling like alls good In my sports world. Phils could have one last gasp in them to keep me occupied til summer league at least, and Hinkie was gonna figure out a way to come out with Wiggins and a top 3 PF. Then 'Embiid has stress fracture' scrolls across the ticker, and I literally paused the game and just stared at the TV in disbelief. Immediately dialed up liberty ballers, praying it was a stupid mistake of some Comcast intern running the scroll. Nope. Disbelief, devastation, sadness.
But in reality, after processing for a couple days, this has opened up a whole world of possibilities. We'll hear 487 more rumors and tweets before Thursday, and none of it will mean jack. Will still be fun to read and debate, but NOBODY is dumb enough to tip their hand before that 1st pick. Bottom line is, we had virtually no chance of getting Embiid before, unless sending Cleveland or Milwaukee a ridiculous haul. Now literally (kg voice) ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!!! This is awesome because Hinkie and it gives us a real shot if Embiid is who's on top of our board. Allowing us to come out of this draft with a LEGIT chance of getting 2 of the top 4, something that wasn't possible before, even for Hinkie. We have the assets to potentially walk away from the draft with Exum and Embiid. Huge Wiggins fan, but this would be a best case scenario. If Wiggins and Parker go 1-2:
Scenario 1 - At 3, we go Exum and then use every asset at our disposal to trade Up from 10 high enough to grab Embiid. If the top two are spooked, so will other teams be. Just like Noel last year, we are the only team who can afford to let their Top 10 pick just sit on the bench for a good portion or all of next year. I don't care if we give up every 2nd rounder and Thad and Wroten and your momma. If you have a chance to get two potential franchise altering talents in the same draft without giving up your core (MCW/Noel) you do it. Even if Embiid is Bill Walton, you still have Exum from this draft.
Scenario 2 - Take Embiid 3. Still try to trade up from 10, but not as important. But you can go guard probably with Stauskus without trading up. Or you could hedge your bet a bit and still go PF to go along with Noel as a contingency plan for Embiid. Guards and swing men are a lot easier to come by than potential Allstar big men. So I probably still try to trade up and go big. Besides, we all know we're not taking 5 second rounders. I'll be really surprised if Hinkie does not package and move up for the guard or 3 and D he wants if this is the way it fell.
Im happy with either of these scenarios, and both are entirely possible if not likely. In fact, they might be better than just getting 'our man' in Wiggins or Parker. But if Embiid does go 1 or 2, not a bad consolation prize to get what we wanted in the first place, and still try to trade up for a second big man. And in the end, if everyone's been right all along and Hinkie has Wiggins far and away #1 on his board, I trust him to give up what is wise to get him.
So stop freaking out Dave (that's me) and any of you who may be in my boat. Cause every little thing... Gonna be alright. One of these scenarios will happen.... And Hinkie. Our top picks have us so distracted we can't even begin to speculate the wizardry that will occur with all the seconds! And for those that say why the blind faith in Hinkie? How bout very likely picking the top two players in last years draft, D-League garbage into gold role players, cap room out the wazoo, and quickly transforming Philly into a destination darling for free agents with a strong young core with state of the art practice facility? And perhaps greatest of all, getting the city to buy into this process! He could retire today and leave the franchise in incredible shape.
