What MIGHT we have with Nerlens?

Here’s something to think about while you’re thinking about who gets to suit up between MCW and Nerlens next year…

One of the above players is Anthony Davis and one is Nerlens Noel. Those are per-40 mins stats for SEC conference games. This comparison is to pick a fairly level set of competition and # of games. One set is 11 games and one is 16.

So, what are we seeing here?

Both are very very good defenders. One of them is just a touch better on the boards and as a shot blocker (a full half a block, but those numbers are astronomical as it is). Remember, that’s per 40 minutes. You just can’t go near the rim on either of them that year. Consider that if the ball got within arms length of either of these guys, 8 times it would turn into a steal or block.

One guy has maybe one hole in his offensive game in that he’s not a very good passer with half the assists, but that same guy hardly ever turns it over so if you give him the ball, there’s little reason for him not to just score. The other guy has a few holes on offense. He doesn’t shoot a whole lot and is pretty bad from the line, but he’s a willing and able passer even though he’s also not going to rate highly as a "ball handler" with those TOV numbers.

Just to make sure that the point has been driven home…let's refer to the game log for Nerlens, which by now you know is the first line of stats above. Nerlens had (out of 24 total games) 12 games with at least 5 blocks (including an absurd 12 blocks in a game against Mississippi (that isn't West Central Dakota state, it's an SEC school)) and at the same time Noel had 5 games in a row in SEC play with at least 6 blocks (Tenn, Aub, Bama, LSU and Miss). It’s impressive that the 12 block game came after averaging over 6 blocks a game for 4 straight games. It’s as if Ole Miss decided to go right at his chest and see what happens. Well, what happened is the Spalding came right back at the shooter 12 times. And, he also had 6 games with at least 4 steals, so there’s that too.

What we have in Nerlens is a future DPOY with this humongous caveat: If he's healthy.
