Sixers reportedly sign Darius Johnson-Odom to 10-day contract

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sp

With the Sixers' roster already at 15 players, a subsequent move is also coming.

Thursday was supposed to all about college basketball and salivating over the Sixers players of tomorrow. It's still been very much about that, especially as this Kansas-Oklahoma State game is coming down to the wire. Then there was this:

It's not a Woj bomb, but it's definitely at least a hand gun breaking the silent brisk early March air in Philly.

The Johnson-Odom signing comes after the Sixers have worked out a bevy of ball-handlers. Casper Ware was the latest, but he clearly did not do enough during his workout at PCOM to earn a week and a half of playing time under Brett Brown.

For those who don't know who DJO is, how dare you. But seriously, he was a JUCO kid who transferred to Marquette and played three seasons just outside Chicago as a Golden Eagle, helping his team get to the Sweet 16 in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. From there, the Dallas Mavericks drafted him with the 55th pick in that June's draft and was traded to the Lakers one day later. He spent some of the 2012-13 season with the Lakers, playing 4 games and never scoring a single point before eventually being waived in January.

This summer he playing in the Orlando Pro Summer League with the Boston Celtics. He looked decent playing the point and feeding Kelly Olynyk, back when the Gonzaga alum looked like the next Dirk Nowitzki rather than a fringe-Rising Stars Challenge participate. He found his way back to the Lakers' training camp this season, but was waived once again before the regular season kicked off. That must've stung.

DJO is built like Eric Bledsoe, but has about 1/27 of the Phoenix cornerstone's talent.

So, presumably cutting Lorenzo Brown to make a roster spot open for him isn't necessarily a major upgrade, but obviously Sam Hinkie sees something in the this kid, who was previously playing for the NBDL's Maine Red Claws.
