Danny Granger... still a Sixer!

There's been a lot of talk about buying out Granger's contract on LB, and I'm happy to report he's still a 76er today.

Danny Granger has always been one of my favorite players, for his grit, his defense, and his relationship with Lebron.

There's immense value for Philadelphia to take Granger, get him back to health, and sell him in the Summer, rather than getting rid of him and tanking on.

Stats:

For everyone that says Danny will hurt the tank, let's take a look at these shot charts:

Shotchart 1392997132460Shotchart 1392997174339

Which player represents the mess shot specialist on the left, and which one represents the mediocrity overall better scorer on the right?

I'll give you a hint: the one of the right is Evan Turner.

Terribly inefficient offensive player, unless he gets uncontested corner 3s distributed to him.

So he's better at 3P% and FT%, substantially better at defense (blocks), but slower, (pace and steals).

What do all of these stats represent?

  • You've just gotten a little worse at offense (16th in NBA Offense Per Game)
  • You've just gotten a little better at defense (30th in NBA Defense Per Game)

This actually helps your chances at tanking, Milwaukee (22nd at defense, and 29th at offense) actually represents this concept, having a playoff worthy offense hurts the tank.

Granger's perceived value vs. Turners:

ESPN Fantasy Draft 2013-14: Average Draft Position

80 Danny Granger, Phi SG 82.1 -8 4.1 -0.9 46.4

87 Evan Turner, Ind SG 87.0 +0.7 3.6 +0.2 100.0

While injured, Granger's perceived value is higher than Evan Turner's at the beginning of each season.

In 2012, a healthy Danny Granger's perceived value was #47 on those same boards, whereas Evan Turner's was #96.

Think this psychological imperative only applies to fans, and not General Managers?

  1. Rajon Rondo was recently being considered for Danny Granger and George Hill
  2. The same Rondo was recently valued at 2 first round picks, Isaiah Thomas and Ben Maclemore by the Kings.
  3. Granger has also been considered in trades for Luol Deng and similar first round value.

Lebron

The NBA is run on star power, I would argue that no matter how good your team, if an all-star caliber player is not on your team, and the ratings aren't there, the NBA will not allow you to win.

"Referees A, F and G were officiating a playoff series between Teams 5 and 6 in May of 2002. It was the sixth game of a seven-game series, and a Team 5 victory that night would have ended the series. However, Tim learned from Referee A that Referees A and F wanted to extend the series to seven games. Tim knew referees A and F to be 'company men,' always acting in the interest of the NBA, and that night, it was in the NBA's interest to add another game to the series. Referees A and F heavily favored Team 6. Personal fouls [resulting in obviously injured players] were ignored even when they occurred in full view of the referees. Conversely, the referees called made-up fouls on Team 5 in order to give additional free throw opportunities for Team 6. Their foul-calling also led to the ejection of two Team 5 players. The referees' favoring of Team 6 led to that team's victory that night, and Team 6 came back from behind to win that series."

Lakers vs Kings 2002 Playoff Series

Danny Granger, makes for incredible ratings because he has been known to do this to the face of the NBA:

Granger isn't here to stop the tank, he's here to teach these kids some old school basketball, and save his career. As 76ers fans, you WANT to lose every single game of the remaining season, while trying to win. Because, building a winning culture, comes at the cost of.. wins.

Now repeat after me:

  1. Inflate his stats with health and pace
  2. Sign and Trade
  3. First Round Pick
