Comparing the Andrew Bynum Deal to a Poker Tournament

There are 12 people left in the tournament. You’re one of the shorter stacks. You get dealt pocket Queens (the chance to land Andrew Bynum). You have 2 options… go all in and risk it now or wait, continue to fold and try to hold out while people drop. Maybe you’ll finish in about the 6th thru 9th spot while people get knocked out. Going all in now might be disastrous. Maybe you’re up against pocket kings or aces (Andrew Bynum had eyes somewhere else and would never re-sign no matter what). Or even worse, a hand like Ace-10 (injury forces Bynum never to play) calls and the ace hits. But hey, if you sit around while your money dwindles (young, cheap assets get older or prove to stink), you will most likely be left going all-in with something like Ace-2 (Josh Smith signing) while even if you succeed and double-up, your money was so low that you basically end up where you are now (6th-9th place)…

Sure, maybe there’s that chance you strike gold and get pocket aces or kings (a true superstar signs or Harkless/Vucevic become stars)… but in all reality, if you want to win the tournament, the best chance is to go all-in now and hope it hits. Did Ace-10 hit the ace against our QQ with this move? Yeah… but c’mon sitting around and waiting for pocket Aces or Kings probably would have ended in mediocre failure. At least now we can enter the next tournament with a chance for a big payday. If we finished 6th, 7th, or 8th, that tournament would have been closed.
