NBA Trade Deadline Rumor: Sixers Still in Running for J.J. Redick

Them! - Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

Along with many other teams who can offer many more enticing assets.

Yesterday, buried at the bottom of a Woj rumor dump post, was a nugget about the Sixers potentially being in on the J.J. Redick sweepstakes because Doug Collins and he are close. It seemed a bit flimsy linkage but it's Woj so we have to report it. Well now, with just a few hours left until the doors close on the Trade Deadline, we have Marc Spears also saying the Sixers could trade for Redick.

Only thing is, all the other teams listed have more assets to trade than the Sixers do. Because the Sixers do not totally own their first-round picks for 2013 and 2015, they can't trade a first until 2017 at the earliest. Even if they miss the playoffs this year, keep the pick, and push all of those commitments back by one year, they still can't trade a first until four years after the Arnett Moultrie pick goes to Miami.

The only way I can see this happening is if Evan Turner goes to Orlando. Some of you who have already given up on Turner will likely love this. But we have Evan for at least next year on a relatively affordable $6.68M and then a slightly less affordable Qualifying Offer of $8.7M the year after. Redick is an expiring contract looking for 4 years and $40 million. He likely won't get it, but that doesn't mean he won't get more than the Sixers would offer him elsewhere on the free agent market.

A one-year rental of J.J. is not worth losing the (however slim) potential of Turner. So should they trade for him, they would either be saying they don't believe in Turner at all and don't want to worry about going into contract negotiations with him OR they intend on signing Redick to a long-term deal.

It's certainly intriguing and I do like what Redick can bring to the team, but I don't know that I'm quite ready to part with Turner. At the very least, trading Turner would make Jrue Holiday sad. And I do not like it when Jrue is sad.
