Great board, great site. Knowledgeable, informative, funny. Don't know how I didnt stumble upon this site before. Oh yeah, that's right... Because I lost interest as we've been stuck in basketball purgatory for the past decade. I used to love to post on these boards, for years on Philly.com amongst others. But shortly after our title run in '01' it became blatantly obvious that our front office had no clue what to do with Iverson, and what direction to take the team. In fact, I look at our 2001 run similar to the '93 Phil's. Lightning in a bottle. A lot of serviceable vets around a volatile superstar MVP (Iverson/Dykstra). But nothing to build long term on, as they both broke down for different reasons. Although can you imagine what Iverson would have done on PED's?!? Topic for another post.
And yes, I know we had a nice little run a few years back. Was really proud of that team, especially taking Boston to 7 games. But did anyone really believe deep down that that core could win a championship? And then last years debacle... I honestly thought we were destined for another decade of mediocrity at best. But then, God looked down upon our pain, and shoed mercy. And said, I shall send the 76ers the GMessiah, and his name shall be called Hinkie. And he shall save the sixers from themselves.
Seriously, it's not possible to do what SamWise has done in 6 months. To take an organization that's an utter mess, and in one draft and a few shrewd deals turn us into what we see before us now. Granted, I don't think even his hinkiness knew what we had in MCW, but wow. Changed the culture and organizational philosophy, found a coach that could implement it, and get our current roster to totally buy in. I am in love with BB almost as much as I am with GM Genius.
I mean, who could have possibly imagined back in June we'd be facing 'the problems' we currently face. We win, we win. We lose, we win. Let's be real, in all likelihood, we will not continue to be a basketball juggernaut. What goes up must come down, and we just don't have the depth to compete, by design. But who knows, maybe our bench continues to play way over their heads. And as far as our starters go, I agree with another poster. If MCW is indeed better than Jrue, and it appears that he is, why do we think we win less than what we did last year? Especially under a regime that seems to be brilliant?
So when we come back to earth a bit, does it make sense to trade one or all of Evan, Thad, and Spence at high value for better pieces for the future? Probably. Or say we start 30-15, do we say we already have our complimentary pieces to our star, and start the future now. Probably. Bottom line, I choose to rest easy and enjoy it either way because I have the utmost confidence that Sam I Am will make the smartest call. Because unlike most every other Philly sports GM, Hinkie seems to be able to make decisions apart from emotions. In fact, I'm not sure Sammy Hinkie emotes at all. And I love this about him.
I'm not gonna lie, I did throw up in my mouth s bit when I heard we will lose our draft pick if we make the playoffs. But then I look at the power rankings, look at our cap space, look at our sudden incredible bright future... I'm just gonna enjoy it. I just wish we had one more big man, who could be a defensive force, rebounder, shot blocker around the rim. That's just what this team needs to really... Oh wait... In Hinkie I trust.
