With a little over a week until the March 15th trading deadline, the Orlando Magic are surely going to trade Dwight Howard...maybe. Magic GM Otis Smith has not been especially candid in most interviews discussing Howard, other than simply stating that the situation has not changed. As it stands, it sounds like just about every team has at laest called to do its due diligence. Most have pointed him headed to New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, or even Golden State. However, as Stephen A Smith (the same one who predicted Lebron to Miami) said last week, the why not the 76ers?
The Case to Trade for Dwight Howard: It’s Dwight freakin Howard! Yeah, he may not resign with the Sixers, but if he does, they have the number one big man in the entire NBA. These guys don’t come along every day, and the Sixers aren’t going to find someone comparable anywhere else anytime soon. With Dwight, they go from a team that is nice to watch and can beat any team any night into one that could potentially win the NBA title.
Even if he doesn’t resign, the Sixers then immediately rebuild. Louis Williams and Spencer Hawes will be afree agents, and Thad Young and Andre Iguodala are both tradeable. They’ll have a bad team, sure, but this good team hasn’t exactly brought a great deal of fans to the WFC (currently ranked #17 in attendance), so any reticence management has about keeping the nucleus of the team to keep fans should be removed. Plus, it has become clear that this team as it is, is likely at best only going to get into the 2nd round of the playoffs. It's hard to see much happening that could ultimately change this.
Getting Dwight Howard will assuredly put fans in the seats and show the commitment this ownership has to ultimately winning a title. It will also re-establish the 76ers in the city of Philadelphia, instead of often the least popular sports team. This team hasn't had a marquee name since Allen Iverson, and although that didn't win a title, it put people in the seats at least. Make it happen, Adam and Rod.
Any thoughts? Think the Magic would even sniff at this?
