Brand (12 points, 12 rebounds) helped keep the Sixers close in the first half, when he had 12 points and eight boards.

"I've never seen anything like that," said Brand of the 0-for-14 beginning. "We can't start out like that. It's unacceptable."

Suddenly, the Sixers find themselves only one game ahead of the Celtics in the division.

"It's a three-team race," Brand said.
