The Philadelphia 76ers have acquired swingman, Sam Young, from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for a second round pick. Bob Cooney broke the news on Twitter:

Sixers acquire guard/forward sam young from Memphis for draft pick. Getting ready to fly home. More later.

Chris Broussard wrote yesterday that the Grizzlies were trying to unload Young in order to get below the luxury tax. Young is due a $1.48M qualifying offer next season.

For the Sixers, this is purely a depth move. Young was a second round pick in the 2009 draft as a senior from Pittsburgh. He's already 26 years old – about to turn 27. He's been a below average offensive threat during his three year career and his only borderline strength is his rebounding from the two/three position. He's below average defensively as well.

I do not see upside in this trade whatsoever. Young will probably act as a rental for this season only and is only likely to play in blowouts. So, the Sixers traded a second round pick for him? Why not sign Xavier Silas instead?

Update: The Sixers traded the rights to 2005 second rounder, Ricky Sanchez, who is playing in Argentina, not a future second round pick.
