Some love for the BUST!!!!

David Thorpe had some nice things to say about our own Evan Turner in his ranking of second-year players. It's an Insider article, so I just copied the relevant part...

------------------------

6. Evan Turner, 76ers
If the NBA handed out its Most Improved Player award now, Turner would be a finalist. He has been much closer this season to what Philly expected of him in his rookie campaign; he is doing lots of little things to help his team win.

Can he score 20-plus points in a game? Yes. Can he grab 10-plus rebounds in a game? Yes. Can he control the ball for long stretches and help run the team as an off guard? Yes.

He has also shown much better shot selection this season and is now one of the two biggest bench producers for perhaps the league's best second unit. His herky-jerky style of a dribble attack is roasting defenders, and he's making more rim shots this season than he attempted last season.

--------------------

Nice :)

I’m okay with the #6 ranking. Fair enough for now.

For now.

I’m starting to develop a little pet peeve at his lack of consistent time, especially in big games when he’s started off playing really well. A bit more time with the ball would bump him up a couple spots.

more rim shots

Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".

I wonder where john wall ranked. I have insider, but I’m too lazy to check.

3, I think. I don’t remember exactly.

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, there will be no trade for Monta!

1. Griffin
2. Monroe
3. Wall
4. Cousins
5. Splitter

wow, cousins? really?

and just to think, I pay hard-earned money to read someone who can’t distinguish the difference between scoring inefficiently and hurting your team and scoring efficiently and helping your team.

Also Tiago Splitter who, as a 27-year old PF, barely rebounds better than Turner.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 9:01 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah im not trading Turner for Splitter right now…That means hes the 4th best player in his draft class (not a bust)

Mine would be

1. Griffin
2. Monroe
3. Wall
4. Favors
5. George
6. Turner
7. Cousins
8. Davis
9. Hayward
10. Fields
11. Splitter
12. Patterson

Isn’t it a little weird how only four of the top ten rookie rankings were top ten picks?

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

by 76ersloyal on Feb 4, 2012 8:33 PM PST reply actions

Also there’s 5 in that top 6 that were top 10 picks.

by yosoysean on Feb 4, 2012 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

Whoops, I was looking at sophomores. I don’t have insider so I can’t see the rookie list.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

maybe draftees are picked because of upside, potential, and how the team sees them fitting in with their system. Some of them have yet to reach this upside while others might never reach it. It’s a gamble.

It’s the reason why super-duper stars like Gilbert Arenas and Monta Ellis were drafted in the second round :)

Ignoring my obvious failures above and posting a better response.

One of the top 10 picks isn’t in the NBA yet (Valanciunas), another hadn’t played organized basketball in quite a while (Kanter), two are high upside Euros who are low on the development curve (Vesely, Biyombo.)

I have no idea which four are in the top 10. Irving is obvious. Knight and Kemba seem pretty obvious too. I would guess Rubio is on the list. Maybe Derrick Williams (if you didn’t count Rubio).

I didn’t think Tristan Thompson was worth a top 10 pick, let alone 4th overall, so I’m not surprised that he’s not in the top 10. Same goes for Jimmer.

The only real surprise in the top 10 in terms of a lack of production is Derrick Williams.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 9:09 AM PST up reply actions

The top ten is:
1. Kyrie Irving
2. Ricky Rubio
3. Kahwi Leonard
4. Jon Leuer
5. Marshon Brooks
6. Kemba Walker
7. Isiah Thomas
8. Chandler Parsons
9. Enes Kanter
10. Nikola Vucevic.

It’s not just the top ten are underperforming, guys we thought wouldn’t do very well are over performing. You’re completely ignoring the fact that these guys are playing very well. Yes, some were high upside guys but did anyone predict Isiah Thomas getting minutes this year?

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

by 76ersloyal on Feb 5, 2012 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

I really don’t understand Leuer at 4. He has shot well but has had very limited playing time.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 10:03 AM PST up reply actions

Leuer has been pretty good when given minutes.

by YBT on Feb 11, 2012 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

Isaiah Thomas getting minutes isn’t that surprising considering the team he was drafted to. His numbers don’t look that impressive to me. It was a pretty weak draft class to begin with.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 10:08 AM PST up reply actions

The Kings actually have a lot of guards (Jimmer, Evans, Salmons, Thornton). Thomas is getting burn because he provides a real spark for them. He can play

by dstern77 on Feb 5, 2012 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

Thomas plays for the Warriors, not the Kings.

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

actually he plays for the kings but good try

by E.T.23 on Feb 6, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

I got NBA league pass and Tyreke Evans on my fantasy team so I’d wager I’ve watched more Kings games than anyone in Philly

by dstern77 on Feb 6, 2012 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

I also have league pass, but I choose not to watch kings games because they’re pretty terrible to watch.

I was going to get League Pass for my computer, but I saw that all Sixers games were blacked out for residents of Philadelphia. My 5 teams were going to be:
1. Sixers
2. Cavs
3. Clippers
4. Thunder
5. Bulls

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

And Tristan Thompson has shown a lot of potential this year on defense and on offense. He’ll have a higher ranking next year. He’s currently ranked 19th.

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

Says the Cavs fan.

by yosoysean on Feb 5, 2012 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

On Defense AND on Offense?! Wow, he does sound promising.

by J.P.Melle on Feb 6, 2012 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

He’s already there defensively, and his offensive game needs polishing. He’s abysmal from the line so teams can just foul him, but Cavs bias aside, I do think he’ll be a good NBA player.

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

how do you call yourself 76ersloyal when you have another team?

by Dan Pearson on Feb 7, 2012 8:07 AM PST up reply actions

Because the Sixers are my one and only Philadelphia team. I follow the other ones, but when everyone I knew was going to Phillies games, I was still spending money on the Sixers, who were not doing very well (and had an abysmal attendance record). When the Sixers play the Cavs, I’m 100% rooting for the Sixers. My whole family is from Cleveland.

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

by 76ersloyal on Feb 7, 2012 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t have another team but I can sorta understand his position. There are certain teams that I want to see do well- Charlotte, Utah, Houston and Denver. I usually root for those teams to win whenever I watch their games.
