Chris Paul Over Louis Williams, Clippers Over Sixers Post-Game Thread

Chris Paul showed why he's the best point guard in basketball.

Louis Williams showed he's either the hero or the goat and how Doug Collins is terrible at diagramming plays.

Post-game thread here. That one stings.

He should be.

Its unexplainable and inexcusable that he took him out.

I blame the guy who said the following:

We need to beat then early, this is not a good team

Clips are not a first class team definitely

Let’s kill them early, put 20 points on them now, they are a joke of a team

JINXED!

Big ups to CP3. The guy is just good.

But seriously… Sixers need to start hitting their FTs. Just not good enough.

This loss hurt me a lot more than the Spurs loss. If only the Sixers could have gotten that last loose ball… ugh.

by PhiladelphiaEagles on Feb 10, 2012 6:41 PM PST reply actions

yeah it hurt… after watching most of the game alone, my jackass “clippers fan” of a roommate happens to come in to watch the clips last possession. 3rd game he’s watched all year, he walks out and says “thats why the clippers are better, they have a star”

The Spurs loss didn’t bother me a whole lot. Can’t win ‘em all, and we were getting some good looks but shots just weren’t falling. This game, however… it was way within our reach, but just couldn’t take it.

Reading this a bit late so late reply.

Hivemind would imply that we don’t think for ourselves. This is completely untrue.

I know it’s still early in the season, but at least Boston lost too.

by PhiladelphiaEagles on Feb 10, 2012 6:43 PM PST reply actions

This was incredibly ugly

But the Clippers have some real offensive weapons and the Sixers were able to hold them to 78 points (They average 99, 4th in the league). Scoring was obviously a big issue, but hopefully this was a just a bad night.

4-3 during this tough stretch isn’t bad, and I think the Sixers have proven they can play with and beat the top teams (excluding the Heat) in the league.

They have to hit FT’s….if they would’ve made at least 2 more the game is completely different and it shouldn’t have come down to that last possession…..at least the cavs and bobcats are up next, they have to get both of those wins no question

by 1shkabibles on Feb 10, 2012 6:45 PM PST reply actions

this is pretty fantastic.

by highwaterhello on Feb 10, 2012 6:46 PM PST reply actions

No one except Evan shot over .500. They all had bad games. What happened to Vucevic, why did he only play 11 min? We gave up a lot of 2nd chance shots in this game.

by RickoT on Feb 10, 2012 6:47 PM PST reply actions

This team has gone on stretches for the last 3 games where they get great looks and cant make a thing.

by Dpez71 on Feb 10, 2012 6:53 PM PST reply actions

Reid-like playcalling at the end there. Collins even sounded like Andy in his presser with the putting players in a better positon to win business. Bah, the Sixers had that game. Gotta finish it.

Ahhhhh

Collins punishing the young guys again but specifically ET as he only played around 2 minutes in the 2nd half? Nice. Whatever was said between the two at the conclusion of the Orlando game has definitely carried over.

by RedHopeful on Feb 10, 2012 7:06 PM PST reply actions

Both Vucevic and Turner were held under 12 min. Only Lavoy had more minutes as Williams and Young. Doug needed to trust his young players here, they both bring unique dimensions to the Sixers game.

by RickoT on Feb 10, 2012 7:18 PM PST up reply actions

Sixers were 15-for-23 from foul line tonight. They’re 385-for-542 from the foul line this year (.710). That’s 27th-best out of 30 NBA teams.

Turner

What happened to turner? I cannot watch the games but I noticed he started out on fire and then only ended with 12 minutes. Did Collins give any reason for that in the post-game interviews?

Some guy at PSU Hershey Med Center just discovered a virus that eats cancer. Where were the CNN trucks for that? THON will probably break $10 mil this year. Put that on "Outside the Lines".

I don’t know what it is but it seems like Turner has the shortest leash of anyone on the team and I don’t understand it.

by EREX21 on Feb 10, 2012 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not too sure either, but I do agree, i’ve noticed that. The one thing I will say is he has been known to have quite the attitude problem. When I went to PSU, I heard through the grapevine through some of the nittany lion players who new ET well that he has quite an attitude and wont keep his mouth shut at times. Maybe Collins wont give in to that?

by pf289 on Feb 10, 2012 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

He does have an attitude problem. I know someone who hung out with him for a night….and let’s just say that it didn’t end well. Very short fuse that kid.

by YBT on Feb 11, 2012 12:05 AM PST up reply actions

So maybe people need to take a step back from their bashing of DC for his handling of Turner. I’m pretty sure he knows his team better than us.

by pf289 on Feb 11, 2012 6:49 AM PST up reply actions

exactly. managing headcases isn’t easy…I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes trade bait at this point.

simply because he needs some attitude adjustments.

Turner

For all the love he’s gotten in this group…guess how many FTs he’s taken in the last 4 games? If you guess anywhere higher than 0, you’d be wrong. One way he could stay on the floor longer is to get to the line.

by YBT on Feb 10, 2012 8:32 PM PST reply actions

That is not just a problem with Turner. The whole team has that problem.

And, as bridgecoach pointed out below, Turner was playing well.

by Ben16 on Feb 10, 2012 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

I understand that we’re historically bad at getting to the line, but with around 20 minutes a game to work with…you have to get there at least one time. I refuse to believe that Doug has made Lou and Thad the de-facto isolation guys to create offense without giving Turner at least a chance of getting to the FT line. I’m not saying that Turner isn’t good….I’m just saying that, he’s not helping the cause of getting easier shots, even though he’s a pretty good passer.

I’m nitpicking…but it’s a significant nit to pick.

by YBT on Feb 10, 2012 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

Well if that is the reason he is not getting time that is beyond stupid.

by Ben16 on Feb 10, 2012 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

It is really inexplicable when Turner comes off the bench on fire to just sit him the rest of the game. I could believe that Collins has made Lou the de-facto iso guy based on his comments about Lou.

by Ben16 on Feb 10, 2012 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

the scary part is…I could as well. Maybe he thinks that even though Turner is a better passer, he thinks that his shaky handle and inability to keep his dribble under pressure or in traffic makes him a liability out there on offense. And he tends to ride him on his missed defensive assignments on help situations as well.

by YBT on Feb 10, 2012 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

The guy you just described there isbeing shaky with the ball could easily be describing Jrue Holiday. Holiday was awful with the ball tonight. He could have easily had another 2-3 turnovers.

by Brannigan1973 on Feb 10, 2012 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

Holiday..he kinda is what he is

Haha true…Jrue is still only 21, but I think that he’s quickly reaching his ceiling, he’s quick, but not explosive. He’s a decent jump shooter, but not really that great at getting his own shot. I think he kinda is what he is at this point. Unless he magically wakes up more explosive and instinctive, this is what we’re getting. I think he has to do too much on this team.

by YBT on Feb 10, 2012 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

This is what happens when your team is built on jumpshooting and the fast break. We really aren’t creative offensively. Mainly our offense consists of Elton Brand elbow jumpers, Iguodala fast breaks, Jrue jumpers from the foul line, Meeks 3 pointers, Thad and Lou isos, 15-20 ft jump shots from Hawes. I wish they had a big man that could roll to the basket on pick and rolls.

you summed up the entire offense…good job.

by YBT on Feb 10, 2012 11:48 PM PST up reply actions

Just as Malik Rose said we needed ET to step up...

ET comes off the bench with 3/4 shooting, 7pts, 2 defensive rebounds and an assist in less than 10 minutes. Offensively he kept the ball moving and everyone’s play stepped up a notch. Defensively, he blanketed his guys and helped us control defensive rebounds whether he collected them or not. And Collins rewards smart productive play by effectively benching him for the rest of the game.

by bridgecoach on Feb 10, 2012 8:35 PM PST reply actions

I hate games like this. It’s one thing when you get beat by a team who is simply better than you and dominates you in one specific area that you can’t defend. This game came down to the last second and we had a shot at winning it.

The most irritating play of the game was Reggie Evan’s steal on EB. What the hell wa EB thinking? Why did just stand there when Reggie deflected the ball? Also, why didn’t Igoudala call a timeout on the inbound pass? I hate nitpicking plays from the game, but this game was extremely frustrating.

Actually it was more irritating when Evans forced a turnover on Jrue Holiday. Seriously reading this thread it seems like 99% of the people here did not notice how awful Jrue was again.

Does Collins trust Meeks more on defense that Turner? I thought it was interesting that Meeks was subbed in for defense. Maybe he wanted Meeks in for his speed and hustle on the inbounds play.

If Collins trusts Meeks for defense over Turner, the man has gone senile. I think it’s more that they’re Orlando on-court fight is something that DC still holds a grudge about (and probably will till he retires).

Same old late game crap

A few thoughts. Jrue Holiday is killing this team right now. He is playing with no purpose half the time when he has the ball. I don’t understand why Doug doesn’t go to Turner and let him play the point when Jrue is glitching out like he was tonight. It seems like Turner has a tiny leash and Holiday is allowed to do all sorts of ridiculous things with the ball and not get pulled. Secondly, Doug Collins is an atrocious coach when it comes to close games. How can he not be? The Sixers are literally something like 7-22 in games decided by 5 points or less over the last year and a half. If the Sixers are behind slightly, tied, or slightly ahead in the last minute of the game they almost always lose. They can almost never get a stop when they lead or score when they need it. Really bad teams win a better percentage of close games then the Sixers. Pure luck would almost guarantee better outcomes in close games. I attribute this to three things: Doug is awful at designing inbounds plays so we always get awful last shots. He rarely sends a double team at the other teams stars late putting all the pressure on a single guy to stop the other teams best player in a one on one situation, and his team can’t shoot free throws. The free throws really arent Doug’s fault but the way he dismissed the free throws in the post game presser it seems doubtfull they are shooting the number of practice free throws I would have these brick layers shooting.
