Bill Simmons - ORL/PHI Trade

Would you do this proposed Bill Simmons trade? Orlando trades - Howard, Hedo Turkoglu's contract atrocity ($34.8 million through 2014) and the Duhon/Richardson cap-cloggers. Philadelphia trades - Elton Brand (expires next year), Evan Turner, Andres Nocioni's Expiring Contract, Spencer Hawes and no. 1 picks in 2012 and 2014. Sixers end up with Howard, Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams, Jrue Holiday, Nikola Vucevic, Jodie Meeks. I'm not sure why Howard would agree to this however.

I’d do it but it would make me extremely sad.

Me too. I wasn’ impressed with ET last year (yes, I admit it) but now it would hurt to see him go.

You’re just happy we get to keep the BOSS in this trade

I wonder if they can throw Tha BOSS in instead of Turner (they’re going to need a super-duperstar to pick up Howard’s production, and everyone knows Turner is a BUST!!!!) and maybe we would then be able to keep Wight as a backup. I would have to run this through the Trade Machine to see if it works, but I would love to find a way to keep Turner and possibly Wight. Of course, Orlando would have to 1) really, really love Tha BOSS and 2) be really, really stupid :)

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, there will be no trade for Monta!

by dweebowitz on Feb 1, 2012 4:43 PM PST up reply actions

Its a hypothetical trade that has no chance of happening, feel free to throw in Boss instead of Turner.

I don't want to trade for Howard...

I want to take the longshot chance of landing him in free agency because then we don’t have to lose a key piece & then most likely bring back Hedo as well

If this guaranteed we keep Howard,

Then I’d do it. But I’d also be sad. I love Turner and White Howard.

I’d do it without even needing a guarantee. It gives the Sixers a legit chance to win the title this season. They’d have a couple of months to convince him to stay, which is helped by the fact that he could make more money re-signing than he could signing in a new place.

With Howard on the team those draft picks likely won’t be very good. Losing Hawes and Brand wouldn’t be a big deal to me. Hawes is still young and has actually shown potential this season but is unneeded with Howard on the team. Brand is advancing in the years and is pretty much an expiring contract though he’s still useful. There is nothing better the Sixers could do with his salary than to include it in a trade for a superstar.

Trading Turner would be the only regrettable part for me. You have to give up something to get something though. I would gladly have Turkoglu/Richardson taking his minutes if it meant Howard was at center.

Beyond this season I would like our chances to re-signing him. If we didn’t than oh well. At least we would have tried. I’d much rather have the team err while trying to acquire a superstar than to be stuck as a 50-win team with very little title aspirations.

I forgot to add that if this very unlikely hypothetical trade were to happen I’d expect the Magic to waive Brand and the Sixers would likely pick him back up a month later… assuming that’s still possible under the current CBA.

The Magic already used their amnesty on Arenas

They don’t need to amnesty him to release him.

What would be the point of paying Elton Brand 17 million dollars to not play on your team?

If they were to make this trade it would put them in full rebuilding mode. Brand in exchange for Hedo and Jason Richardson would save them a total of over $24 million in salary. Brand’s also comes off much sooner.

Brand becomes a veteran who potentially makes them win more games and plays the same position as the player who would then become their best player (Ryan Anderson). It’s better to pay him to leave than it would be to pay him to play.

by yosoysean on Feb 2, 2012 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

Could we amnesty Hedo if we got him in a trade?

I’d do the trade as constituted, but I’d also see if they went for this.
Howard
Redick
(If necessary, Richardson or Duhon’s salary)
Brand
Nocioni
(insert non-Jrue, non-Iggy player of their choice)
(insert second non-Iggy/Jrue player if they really insist, so long as we aren’t losing two of Thad/Hawes/Turner/Boss)

depending on who we lose, we can send out a lineup with Holiday Redick Iggy Hawes/Thad/Vucevic and Howard

You’re saying you wouldn’t do the trade if it meant giving up Hawes, Lou, Brand and Nocioni?

my trade gives up Nocioni, he’s the second player I have listed to go over there. Brand was the first player I sent over. I would just rather not have Hedo.

by Dan Pearson on Feb 2, 2012 8:36 AM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t do this trade. I think depth and consistency are the two most important things in the shortened season. I would keep the team intact and try to get Howard as a free agent next season. If the Sixers win the first round, upset Chicago in the 2/3 matchup and take the Heat to 6 games, then Howard probably signs and the Sixers have their superstar and supporting cast.

by jkrisch on Feb 2, 2012 6:58 AM PST reply actions

I was thinking same thing with depth but don’t you take the chance and hope you can fill-in around Howard before the deadline with some veterans on not so good teams willing to come for peanuts and a chance to win?

by dp on Feb 2, 2012 7:00 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe, but I think we match up better with Miami without that trade. If we give up turner, then DC has to play Meeks or Lou at all times. I don’t like the idea of them being switched off onto Wade or Lebron. As good as the Sixers perimeter defense is, I don’t think they need a shot blocker in the middle. Howards most valuable skill for the sixers is his rebounding, but that would offset some of the benefits of players like Iggy and Jrue rebounding well above their positional average. I’m just not sold that the team is better with that move and picking up those contracts, there isn’t much chance to improve further.

The problem is that LeBron and Wade are even better rebounders for their positions.

Miami outrebounded us by 21 in the loss this season. They also outrebounded us by an average of 10.25 in the 4 playoff losses last season.

by yosoysean on Feb 2, 2012 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

It depends

if they could get Howard to agree to an extension as part of the trade. If they can, I would not worry about winning it all in the shortened season. My focus would then turn to building the team around him for the long haul.

I would make this trade but why would Orlando?

GS offered to take back Hedo’s contract and give them Stephen Curry
LA will probably offer Andrew Bynum
NJ offered a most likely lottery pick
CHI will offer Taj Gibson, Deng, and Asik

If we offer a trade for Howard it would have to start with Thaddeus Young and Evan Turner.

NJ won’t have a lottery pick with Howard on the team… their trade revolved around a three team deal with Portland with Howard going to the Nets, Brook Lopez, Gerald Wallace and some first rounders going to the Magic and a ton of first rounders going to the Blazers. I think the Magic turned down an offer of Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez and seven first rounders. Something like that.

True. Just looked at the standings and NJ was only 2 games away from being the #8 seed, which is kind of sad considering that they are 10 games below .500. I though that their record would be similar to that of Charlotte and Detroit.

Exactly – Why would Orlando take back anything centered on Brand, Turner or Young. Howard is a top-5 player in the league, in his prime and is getting better. They would be much better off with Bynum, Noah and Deng, or lottery picks and Lopez.

Sure, he is a better trade piece than Brand. But what Golden State is offering and what Chicago could offer is much better than Lopez.

Totally agree with that statement

by DCgreenlantern on Feb 2, 2012 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

Brand is only a part of the trade to balance salaries and provide future cap relief for the Magic. Comparing him to a player in another trade is silly.

Though I agree that the Magic are likely to get much better offers for Howard. This trade isn’t awful though. They get Turner, two draft picks, and massive cap relief by getting rid of Hedu and Richardson/Duhon.

I think the best trade for Orlando would be Noah+Deng for Hedo and Howard.

I read from somewhere that Orlando’s owner is old and doesn’t want another rebuilding project. Which is foolish IMO. I also think that Otis Smith is trying to save his job.

I actually think this might be the best trade for Howard-

Bynum for Howard. Its what will eventually happen.

Howard has said he’s not promising to resign if traded to the Lakers. He’s worried about following in Shaq’s footsteps.

by Naismithball on Feb 2, 2012 11:41 AM PST reply actions

Word.

Overall I agree, but I think he knows 3 things for sure and has one inclination:
1. He wants out of Orlando.
2. He doesn’t want to be hated like Lebron.
3. He wants to play for a championship caliber team.
1 Inclination – He doesn’t want to be seen as following in Shaq’s footsteps.

by J.P.Melle on Feb 2, 2012 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

probably right here

He knows Orlando Sucks. Its hard for them to succeed because they have hedo and jameer and howard taking up all the money and hedo and jameer aren’t good enough complementary pieces for him to win a chip.
He saw the decision, doesn’t want to do that either, so he’s made it clear he’s not staying.
Of course, who doesn’t.

Hopefully Howard is available in the offseason. Sixers can afford him if they amnesty Brand and do the no-brainer on Nocioni’s team option.
I have the Sixers at about 39 million with Iggy, Thad, Holiday, Lou Will, Turner, Meeks, Vucevic, and Allen all on the team.

by Dan Pearson on Feb 2, 2012 12:17 PM PST up reply actions

4. He also wants to get paid the max he can get. Lebron took a discount to come to Miami. Melo bitched his way out of Denver to get an extension and sign for the most money. I think Howard needs to go the Melo route and bitch his way out of town if he wants the most money. I think if he signs with a team in free agency he will make 20 million less over the lifespan of his contract than what he could of made in Orlando.

Hadn't read that anywhere.

You sure of that one or theorizing? It would explain why he requested a trade rather than equivocating for the season and then not resigning. But his desire to not be universally hated like Lebron would explain the trade request as well.
