Andre Iguodala is Not Playing Overseas; Other Plans?

It was tweeted just a couple hours ago by the Philadelphia Inquirer's Kate Fagan that Andre Iguodala doesn't look like he will be playing overseas. The tweet stated:

Andre Iguodala has no plans to sign overseas during the lockout. He'd consider a tour, by right now not entertaining year-long contract offers.

It was originally rumored that Iguodala was expected to head out to the Philippines, but it seems like plans have changed. Many superstar players such as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose have played just two exhibition games in the Philippines and each made $400,000. Two exhibition games. They are pickup games. They don't even matter!

Anyway, the reason behind the decision is pretty much unknown, but from what I've read in the past I saw him leak a sneak peak of something he is trying to start in an interview with Dei Lynam of csnphilly.com. When Lynam asked Iguodala about his summer reading he responded with this intriguing response:

I just read Malcom X’s new book. I got through that in China. Now I am reading Law of Attraction and I am about to start my own company so I got "The Art of Start." It’s on the New York Times best seller list. I am about to start reading that in hopes it will help with this company I want to start. I am hiding it right now but hopefully it ends up like Facebook or something like that and when I am done playing basketball this will seem like minimum wage compared to what I make with that.

Facebook? OK, that's definitely a stretch. But was this the possible reason of deciding not to play in the Philippines during this NBA lockout? Quite possibly. Or maybe it's just an epic fail of me trying to put two and two together.

I think its foolish to read to much into Iguodala’s business claims. Honestly, they sound like pipe dreams, or just a fad at the moment for him. I doubt its the reason why he’s not signing overseas contract offers. If this lockout eliminates the season, I bet he’ll be looking to sign an offer sheet somewhere.

Look, he’s a bright guy, and I’m not surprised he has business interests outside of basketball, or plans for his future. Doesn’t mean he’s not going to be in shape when the lockout eventually ends, which is all I care about. Andre is nothing if not professional.

As far as the Facebook stuff goes, every entrepreneur I’ve ever dealt with says the same stuff. You can’t have a successful start-up without a crazy amount of belief in yourself and your idea. And I have dealt with a LOT of entrepreneurs over the years…

…unfortunately, it’s generally when their company has failed. Which almost all of them do. But you never know.
