Doug always puts a positive spin on things, warranted or not. Sounds like he really wanted both Vucevic and Allen.

Collins was all over these picks. This is now the 2nd offseason in a row where we went after big men with varying degrees of perimeter skills. It seems like having a big man that can shoot and pass is part of the plan to tie our band of talented misfits into a half court offense.

My issue with this plan….
it feels like our goal is to win 50 games in the near future, not to build a contender…because we are worrying too much about “need” and “fit”.

All that negative stuff aside, Vucevic looks better than what you get in most drafts at 16.

like packimop, I agree with the last statement. I’ve been a lurker for a while, drawn out of my shell by the ridiculous anti-Vucevic slant if this blog. Nice to see a couple commenters who recognize the talent we are getting at #16. Vucevic is going to be a legit player, we needed a center, I don’t understand what the deal is here.

I think what really bothered me was seeing all the posts about “If we wanted Vucevic why didn’t we trade down.” Simple answer, there were other teams that wanted him.

I’d say that Vucevic is a vast upgrade over Hawes. Far more coordinated in the low block and he actually has good form on his jumper and handles. Not to mention his work ethic, I feel like Vucevic can translate.

Whereas if Collins REALLY is expecting improvement from the crap we saw last season, good luck. Hawes is only as good as the refs don’t call a foul on him. Because that’s all he has, the ability to use his 7 foot frame to push people out of the way. Defensively, he’s terrible. Offensively, he’s terrible.

Your loathing for Hawes is why so many of the Sixers’ faithful had an initial gut reaxn against this pick. The fear is that Vucevic is more of the same on the defensive end. Without question, Vucevic’s offensive game is very pro-ready and translates to the NBA better than what Hawes brought to the table last season.

While I haven’t watched Vucevic in College, the few glimpses of defense I’ve seen him play in workouts….combined with some of the scouting reports…..scares me a little bit. He looks like a better one-on-one defender than Hawes, but not exceptional in that department. He looks like he is potentially a problem defending screens and protecting the rim against NBA level talents. He actually looks a little worse than Hawes in that department. My hope is that I just haven’t seen enough of Vucevic and that there’s more to him on the defensive end. My other hope is that coaching can help bring out some of his defensive potential.

Take those fears and combine it with the fact that there was more talent still on the board than in most drafts, and hence the reaction.
