Thorn: Sixers aren't committed to drafting big man
(with best-of-Collins 2010-11 video)
Here is a portion of the Tuesday late-night blog:
Thorn said the Sixers "have not determined which way we will go concerning position. It depends on who is available and what we may or may not do before the draft."
The Sixers' two biggest need areas are for a defensive-minded interior player and a scorer. There appears to be more promising young big men than prolific scorers in this year's draft, which is widely perceived as not an especially strong group.

It depends on who is available and what we may or may not do before the draft.
This is about it in a nutshell, no? I would assume, or at least hope, that Thorn is looking to make some sort of deal somewhere to either improve the current talent pool, as he puts it, or to gain more future assets (maybe an extra first-rounder for next year or something by dropping down). Or possibly there could be a deal for Iguodala. Or someone else. Maybe we’ll sign-and-trade the Donger for Dwight Howard. Hey. You never know :)
But I don’t want to assume, at this point, that the big action of the offseason will be re-signing Thad Young to more than he deserves. Or at least not the only action.
The Sixers made pre-draft trades on June 7 two years ago (Evans for Kapono) and June 17 last year (Dalembert for Nocioni and Songaila). Believe Thorn would like to make it three in a row.
Possibly, Tom, but the moves that need to be made here are bigger than it seems that Thorn (or Stefanski) has been willing to make to this point. Trading Nocioni (for example) for another limited-use player isn’t what’s going to help this team at this point. Besides, I kinda like Noce. :)
(It was Noce and Hawes, by the way…Songaila came over with Brackins for Willie Green and Jason Smith…)
I don’t smell an Iguodala deal in the works. From all indications, no one is swinging for the fences. Do you have any sense of anything that might be brewing?
Ugh.
Just read a mock where they have us picking a mediocre shooting guard, just so the front office is finally convinced that they have enough shooting guards to trade Iguodala. Who, of course, is a small forward. I always enjoy it when someone who spends a lot of time following another team tries to sound intelligent about ours :)
