Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

What if?

Now I know many of you do not like Samuel Dalembert but this is completely off the wall scenario.  What if we were able to sign Sammy this off season to a deal that is less than the deal that he is on.  Would you want the Sixers to do it?  I personally think he would be good in the coach Collins system both defensive and offensive.  I'd like to hear from everyone, just to get your input.

If we can get him on a deal below $10mil I’d consider it

that was what I was thinking

I would like him back, and I think he fills a missing piece defense and rebounding and the alleyoop

The only problem might be

a lot of people may go after sammy but then again he never know what he is thinking he seemed to really enjoy his time here and did a lot for our community and is still doin for our community

I wouldn't give him...

…what he is likely to get on the open market. I might give him a 2/12 or something, but he’ll get way too much because Cs always do. But we are supposed to know better…we’ve already had the Sammy Experience. We should know not to overpay him. I guess this will be a test of the Thorn Administration’s savvy.

Also, do we really want another refugee from Eddie and the Jordanaires?

That being said, he obviously wouldn’t mind coming back, or at least that’s what he said in his interview after the Sixers/Kings game. And he would definitely serve a purpose, and in the short term, at least, I would rather have him than Hawes. Although Hawes is much younger, and therefore has an opportunity to suck for a much longer time than Sammy.

You have to look at the options available to you. Do you draft a C in the mid-first and hope he’s good enough to carry the load? Do you sign a stopgap (like Sammy) until you can get a high-end C? Do you try to pry one of Sacramento’s young bigs away? How? Could Thorn get them to take Tha BOSS? Do you roll the dice with a…I don’t know…Tyson Chandler (I think he’s a free agent this year, although it might be next) and hope he’s your missing link? How do you get far enough under the cap to get him? Krapono and Donger’s expirings aren’t going to get us under the cap at all…I don’t even know how we would sign Chandler. Sign and trade for, say, BOSS and Noce? Would Mark Cuban even consider that?

chandler is interesting

I dont really understand the why people see him as so much better than sammy. He will probably actually be paid more. Also chandler has only one offensive move like sammy the dunk. I kinda understand the whole eddie refugee just because he wanted to be traded, but it may have been more how eddie used him that he wanted to be traded and who wouldn’t want to be traded from a 27-55 team. I just don’t like chandler because of the injury risk and he will want more money than sammy

He wanted to be traded from the .500 teams too.

Sammy likes the ball. No one wanted to give it to him. That was his big issue. His lack of post moves, crappy hands, and propensity to pass to fans seated in the second row prevented him from getting the ball. He’s a kvetch.

On the other hand, he rebounds, plays defense, and protects the rim. Which we desperately need.

Hawes is a bit more offensively talented, at least as a jump shooter. He has better hands. He’s a pretty good passer. He has a good attitude.

On the other hand, he also lacks a post game, and he doesn’t rebound, play defense, or protect the rim.

I guess the question above is the relevant question. What to do? It’s much easier to say “This guy isn’t any good” than it is to solve the problem. The only answer is to clear out maximum cap space and sign Dwight Howard in 2012, except that will never, ever happen. :)

What I would do (since we’re presenting solutions) is to sign Sammy for a 2 year deal…let him line up with Brand’s contract expiring. Draft as many bigs as we can to develop the next couple of years. Once Brand and Sammy expire, sign the best available big. Hopefully, at least one of the guys we draft will be a decent complimentary player.

Or we can re-sign Hawes to an insane contract (anything more than 3/$9M), which I’m sure he would ask for.

Let someone else overpay him. If he’ll sign for 3/9, sign him and Sammy both. Let him be the offensive-minded backup. Then they can both go away in a few years. Or Hawes will have learned how to play by then, and we can then overpay him property.

Realistically, we probably won’t do any of these things, but I’m not sure what the answer is. I’m pretty sure it’s not “use Tony Battie as your starter.”

ok that is a good rationale

I would be fine with signing sammy to a two year deal and possibly developing someone i wonder if whiteside is available just a random thought

Sam Dalembert was taking BOSS style jump shots before Lou Williams grew pubes.

Wow you guys really need to cool it about this. Sammy’s gone, it’s in the past, he isn’t going to make us some kind of contender. Forget about it already.

We’re amusing ourselves with hypotheticals.

This offseason, we might be center-less, if they don’t want to re-sign Hawes, which I hope they don’t, at least not to any sort of large contract. Sammy is available, and we know what he is, for better or worse.

So it kills a few minutes :)

Alright that’s fair. I feel like I hear about this ALL the time though

If we manage to sign at least one defensive minded center, I’ll call the offseason a sucess.
