Thaddeus Young and Sixers Near Deal
With free agency just having officially started, the Sixers have made their first wave of news and it is not a surprising one. Per Kate Fagan, Thaddeus Young is closing in on a deal to return to the Sixers next season and probably more.
#Sixers & restricted free agent Thaddeus Young are closing in on a deal to bring him back to the Sixers, multiple NBA sources have confirmed
We let you all speak at length about Thad a few days ago, but have yet to come out with our official stance on signing him. This is probably fitting because it all comes down to what the terms are. If we're talking a four year deal worth $50 million, that's one thing. If it's smaller or frontloaded or anything, then we could be slightly happier.
When it comes down to it, for me, Thad is a very very talented bench player. He's got a ton of ability but not much in the way of refined skill and, after four years in the league, I can't see him putting it all together. We love what Thad can bring to a good team but for the Sixers, a middling franchise with no realistic plans of contending in the near future, he's just another contract to weigh down the books.
I'm crossing my fingers that it's not more than $7 million per year. How are you feeling?
Also: Tony Battie was resigned. I can guarantee you at least a million words on this decision. They will not be good words.

The Sixers need a Center. Locking up Thad might be a prelude to trading him. Not a great defender and a subpar rebounder, but fast as a gazelle, he’s a good bench player. With a better shot, he’d be worth more, but it’s his lack of defense and board work that make him a backup.

True, but two smaller market teams, Houston and NO would have added players with star- cache while ceding one to the Lakers. I thought this was a good trade for those two teams who both wanted it. Blocking the trade makes no sense if the idea was to help small market teams.
Stern is a schmuck.
Besides, it would have taken the Lakers out of any chance they had at contending for a while and that’s always a good thing!

Whoops – now they have the best point guard, kobe AND the best center in the league
Yeah they wouldn’t content at all
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
yeah but in order to contend in this league everyone on your roster has to be a big man with 20/10 potential.
"If Iguodala were a legitimate "true" 17 PPG scorer, we’d be a better team. When at least 8 of those points come off the fast break, his true offensive production is a reality: 8-11 PPG." - LeQuan Glover
Bynum for Howard
or Brook Lopez for Howard
Or howard walks
Which do you think is the best of the 3?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Howard is the best of them, and is somewhat loyal to Orlando. He figures he has just as much of a chance of winning staying there or going to another team that has to gut itself to get him.
I really doubt that Orlando trades him anytime soon.
Dude
When did you get psychic powers?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Cache?
Odom doesn’t have cache – odom was the fourth optoin on a good team – he showed in miami he can’t be a leader of a team
Gasol – maybe I guess
And New Orleans took on contracts they had to pay but got no better
It was a bad deal for them – but it was inevitably the bad deal
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Odom was the Center on the USA basketball team that won a championship. He’s the fourth option on the Lakers, but he’s a premier power forward. He could be a part of another championship team as an integral piece, IMO. I’d rather have him than Brand.
Ok
I forgot all about you
All done

The Sixers are sort of in a lose-lose with the Thad contract situation.
It is not the Sixers fault that the new CBA will lead to inflated contracts this year (with teams forced to pay the 85% cap minimum.) So “market value” for this year is artificially inflated.
That leaves the Sxiers with the following poor choices:
1. Try and jump the market and sign Thad before he negotiates with other teams (and likely overpay Iguodala style.)
2. Wait until Thad gets an offer from another team- which will lead to either ill-will or losing a good player for nothing.
The Sixers seem to be trying to find a middle ground, where they have Thad contact other teams to get a sense of what offers will be (and learn what his market value actually is) and then quickly reach a deal. This way they don’t pay more than the market and everyone is kept happy. The downside is that in the big picture they still will be overpaying.
But it leaves the question:
What is more harmful- losing Thad for nothing, or having 2-3M more against the cap each of the next 4-5years? Very similar to what the Sixers faced with Iguodala, but it sounds like at least this time they will be over-paying because the market forced them to. As opposed to Iguodala, where they chose to overpay.
It's the sixers fault
that they think continuity with a mediocre roster is a good idea
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
They probably thought the new CBA would have teeth and that Thad would be forced to sign for less than the current market.
Or
they’re just not any better than snider was?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
I'm confused
What is more harmful- losing Thad for nothing, or having 2-3M more against the cap each of the next 4-5years?
It’s not as blanket as that
let thad walk
waive brand
trade iguodala
for instance
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
What is the end game there?
That means unloading 1/2 of their players (Iguodala, Brand and Young) basically to be terrible and have cap space. So basically tanking, since I doubt that a top FA would want to join that emasculated roster.
Does tanking like that make them better sooner?
It’s a 3-5 year plan, you draft some players. They may or may not pan out, but this core of non-shooters, no size and no post play isn’t gonna win anything more than 41 other than in Rod Thorn’s dreams.

I don't know
You can’t pedict the future and neither can i
Does tieing up the cap room for the next 5 years on mediocre talent that can’t get out of the first round make them better sooner…no it doesn’t because they aren’t in a position to do anything.
You see it just as taking but it also gives them MANEUVERABILITY – which they won’t have if they give thad what is now defined as the ‘market’
And hell – what are they going to give Hawes right now
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Do they have to give something to Hawes? I hope not.

They don't have to
want to bet they do?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
still hope they retract the qualifying offer (can they still do that?) and sign him for much less, if anything.

I believe
They can retract it
but have you seen what players are getting on the market right now – you can’t low ball anyone yet
That stupid salary floor
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Yeah its tough. Like I said before, I don’t see the Sixers being top 4 in the East in the next 4 years. So it is hard to justify trying to be competitive instead of tankapooloza.
And yet
That’s what they’ll do – thus WASTING an asset like Iguodala so he’ll just leave when his contract is up.
New Owners – same damn thing (ala Andre Miller)
Sigh
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
There's no guarantee
that anything works out
but one plan gives a modicum of hope that they might possibly contend for a title in the foreseeable future
Continuity gives me the hope that one day – if all the stars align – they might win a round in the playoffs
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
What would you do, if anything to enable the Sixers to compete with Miami in the forseeable future? Blowing it up isn’t a plan.
I'm sorry
But I don’t work in the NBA
do you somehow think standing pat with the roster as it is give the sixers a chance to compete with Miami in the forseeable future?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
I have to believe that with some sort of roster overhaul the Sixers could become competitive, but only if they get some further luck in the draft. A real Center like Dwight Howard on the Roster would make the team competitive. It’s just that there’s no way to get him.
So then
why give Thaddeus Young a long term deal?
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
The problem is the Sixers have seemed unwilling to blow it up and start over. And that’s what’s so infuriating.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
And
At least I was hopeful that new ownership would take the chance to start over
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
I'm still trying
to be hopeful – but that hope is fading quickly
Keeping Thorn was not the right first move
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Be patient, they haven’t even played a game yet. I think Hawes is probably gone in exchange for someone else’s reject. Thorne has a chance to try and work some deals. Dallas proved Miami has flaws as a team – With those three making so much Miami will never be able to add the additional players to put them over the top.
Really not the point
Whether or not they’ve played a game yet – i’ve been unimipressed with the moves the ownership hasn’t (and has) made so far
They seem to think a new mascot and cheaper prices for seats they couldn’t sell last year is the thinks fans want
I want a better product, I want better people running the show…so far they’ve done nothing to impress me that they are better than Snider
You don’t get the benefit of the doubt with me – you suck until you prove otherwise
Tough
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Well that’s ok if you want to be totally unreasonable. There was no league until a week or so ago. It’s not as though there has been a lot of time for the team to do anything. even if they wanted to.
Not impressed with their creativity for the Mascot. Instead of giving us three lousy choices they should have a contest. Cheaper tickets is a step in the right direction. Making a strong move in free agency would be even better.
And yet
that extra time could have been used to fire thorn and build a better front office
and yet
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
I had hope
Green LAntern wouldn’t suck – even after I knew who the screenwriter was
It wasn’t much hope :)
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
I was right there with you. I wanted it to be good because I love the character and it sucked spectacularly. Though I will say Kyle Rayner is my favorite of the Sector 2814 G.L’s.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Not

But Greg Berlanti is an awful hack – i would have rather judd winnick wrote the movie

I got this movie
on netflix the other day – for free – i forget the name – but it’s with emily mortimer – he plays an ‘efficiency’ type guy whose life goes to hell for a few weeks because his wife messed with his watch – it’s awesome
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
If you want to blow it up then Amnesty Brand.
You need a player like Thad. You will have to pay that player at least 6M. So if he starts at 9M that is “throwing away” 3M a year. That will not make or break what they can do- especially if Brand is staying.
Why
if you’re blowing it up now do you need a play like Thad for the next 4 years?
He has more value in a sign and trade to get more assets than in being on the court for the sixers
Blowing it up also requires trading iguodala
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
Its a plan… hope you get Drummond to pair with Jrue and Turner and build quickly from there.
But its a pretty risky plan, since it could mean absolutely stinking for the next 8 years. And I’m sure that Jrue and ET will not want to stay if they watch the team get dismantled and then stink until they hit the market.
Magic amnesty Arenas. Couldn’t see that coming.

But while many here might not value Andre Iguodala – Dwight Howard might?

Dwight Howard doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Totally overrated, overpaid player.

Yeah I saw that on CSN earlier. Not sure who they could send back that would make it worth it. That team has a lot of bad contracts.

Oh bubkis
but the point is – at least according to one pretty big player – it seems that Andre Iguodala is actually respected around the league :)
My true name is Stormageddon Bazinga Jones
other players around the league don’t have a clue about Iguodala’s true value – Trevor Ariza/8mil per year player.

If that’s the deal, I guess I can live with it, 8.4 AAV (that’s the right term right?), love to see it front loaded though

That’s not too bad. I can definitely live with that. I was thinking over 8 per and I’d have a heart attack, but 8.4 is close enough.
