Report: Chris Paul to Lakers, Gasol to Rockets, Odom, Scola, Martin to Hornets

Two credible sources confirm. First, Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports:

Correction: The proposed deal to the Lakers is Chris Paul for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, source says.

And Ken Berger from CBS Sports:

Source confirms updated @WojYahooNBA report that Hornets get Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom from the Lakers for Chris Paul.

UPDATE (seconds later): Details not finalized but based on my understanding of it via the Twitters of Woj and Marc Stein, here's who gets who:

NO: Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic
LA: Chris Paul
Hou: Pau Gasol

Still developing. Discuss details and be hysterical here. - Levin

Star-divide

The proposed trade doesn't affect the Sixers all that much. Neither team is in the Sixers' division, let alone conference, and the Sixers are nowhere near contention, so the Lakers getting Paul -- whether that makes them better or worse -- does not directly affect the Sixers championship dreams any time soon.

Also, the Sixers weren't rumored to be players for either Paul, Bynum, Gasol or Odom (besides a rinky dink Odom for Iguodala-for-Odom rumor last summer), so they aren't directly affected in that sense either.

That said, this is a mammoth deal for the NBA landscape. Perennial title contenders and the most-talked about team in the NBA -- the Lakers -- are reportedly on the verge of acquiring the league's best point guard. In turn, they're parting with two key pieces of their recent championship teams. I still haven't formed an official opinion of the deal and what it means for the NBA as a whole, but as a full-time, passionate Laker hater, I genuinely hope this does not work.

Check out At the Hive and Silver Screen and Roll for Hornets and Lakers fans' reactions, respectively.

Reminder: the off-season officially begins in about 5.5 hours. Go Sixers?

Hmmm

I believe that

A. The lakers are worse right now than they were before the trade
B. They lack the bullets to get Dwight Howard now
C. If they don’t have a follow up move planned already – this is a dumb move

Don’t you always have all the bullets to get Dwight Howard when he only wants to go to your team?

I haven’t seen a single reliable report that Howard said he only wants to go to the lakers. (There are two teams in LA)

And if the magic won’t cooperate – then no – you don’t – because the lakers would not have the cap to sign him

Is the change better than brook lopez and the nets first round picks (and say one young player?)

I don’t think anyone wants lakers first round picks with howard/paul/bryant on that roster they would be – probably – at best – 26th in the first round – at best

The whole stadium thing is a real mess. I mean AIG is agreeing to make the LA convention center one of the best in the world (for free) to get this stadium built, that’s hundreds of millions of free work that the city SHOULD have already done, but there still seems to be hold ups and one of them is ’can’t break ground without a team’ and yet the NFL won’t let a team move without a stadium :)

ANother thing is that

A. The chargers are an easier fit in LA
B. They do want two teams but one NFC, one AFC, and Minneosta is a nice fit, put up in the nfc west and boot the cardinals to the south and move someone from the south to the north :)

Nevertheless, It wouldn’t be for this year. A Bynum-Paul duo would be a good duo for the next 5 years. They’ll also convince some other douchebag all star to force a trade to them.

I don't think

Bynum alone is worth howard – so if odom is in the first deal – the lakers don’t have enough (in my opinion) to get howard and when they sign Chris Paul they won’t have enough cap room though they still have bynum – assume he doesn’t miss another season due to injury:)

Looks like Lakers might also get Okafor – according to Lakers beat writer Mike Lesnahan. If not him, I think they have to take on salary somehow to make the deal work. Okafor/Bynum for Howard, though better, doesn’t quite make sense either, right?

by J.P.Melle on Dec 8, 2011 5:03 PM PST reply actions

This is the part of the play

where it gets “leaked” that Howard will only sign an extension with the Lakers, lowering his trade value with every other team and in effect forcing Orlando hand to accept 50 cents on the dollar for him (Bynum).

But I think there’s a difference between medium-term injuries and chronic-long term injuries like a torn ACL. Sammy came back to be a productive shotblocker for several years.

Has Bynum had a serious, long-term injury in his history? Well, let’s take a look:

Andrew Bynum’s injuries:

*Jan 13, 2008- Dislocated left kneecap/bone bruise — arthroscopic surgery on May 21st 2008 — missed playoffs — returned for start of 2008-09 season on October 28th 2008
*Nov 3, 2008 — Strained rotator cuff right shoulder — didn’t miss any games
*Nov 25, 2008 — Bone spur right foot - didn’t miss any games
*Jan 31, 2009
Torn MCL right knee — no surgery — out until April 9th 2009
*Nov 4, 2009 — Elbow strain — missed 2 games
*Mar 19, 2010 – Strained achilles — out until April 18th 2010
*May 1, 2010 – Torn meniscus right knee — played through playoffs — arthroscopic surgery on July 29th 2010 — out until December 14th 2010
*Jan 30, 2011 — Bone bruise left knee — missed one game

You had a couple of minor shoulder problems, and some reoccuring knee problems. The most important thing to note, is that Bynum never really opted for surgery to correct these problems as they first appeared. Instead he played through it/rested it for the Lakers playoff chances. A perfect example is the bone spur in his right leg, no surgery. Next couple of months, boom that turns into a Torn ACL.

I think if Bynum has an offseason to recover and actually take care of his body, he can have a strong season like he did last season. Also, you’ve got Chris Paul to run the pick and roll with, nuff said.

So when John complains about Bynum being out the first five games of the year, it’s like SERIOUSLY? So they’re gonna win 54 games instead of 59. The Lakers could use some additional size up front, but it’s not gonna kill them.

Of course, I understand the defensive arguments that need to be made, in the hopes of a non-Lakers dynasty. But this is Paul/Kobe, and it might recreate a Jordan/Pippen effect. Who was the Bulls center? Luc Longley, I mean seriously. Lakers got a hell of alot better with this trade.

Dalembert had one injury that forced him to miss an entire season. He then missed 18 games total in the next 8 seasons. That’s not oft-injured.

I concede the point

I forgot about history and how it repeats it self

The lakers once trade their starting center (tall) for the draft rights of one Kobe Bryant (small) – who was drafted by the then Charlotte Hornets

Sometime thereafter, i don’t know the exact timing, the best center in the league left orlando and signed with the lakers to form a nasty pairing that led to a sick lakers dynasty (when they got the right coach.)

It may seem silly but I now believe that one way or another Dwight Howard is going to end up a laker because of the fact that history is already repeating.

And the nba will be thrilled when it happens no matter what comments they make publicly :)

Only Pau Gasol is no Vlade Divac, Gasol has largely been a disappointment. 08 NBA Finals gets bitched out by Garnett, 011 Western Semis, Dirk takes it to him. Gasol had that one series against the Celtics again in ’010 but that was it

Gasol is a regular-season player(and a player generally against weak front courts). But if you’ve got a tough front court to body up Gasol, you can neutralize his finese game.

Not to say that Pau Gasol isn’t a good player, he’s a very good player. But Chris Paul is a superstar, even taking positions into considerations: Paul>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gasol

Does it hurt to have the truth told to your faces? Well, I will. You’re not that smart You think 15/5/5 is great, that it’s so amazing. Ultimately, you neglect the other things. You neglect the wing’s most important part of this game. In fact you’re not even able to comprehend it!

When you can’t post up a guy, isolate a guy or even run screens and cuts for a guy(because the guy won’t cut period), that guy is effectively worthless on the offensive end. Worthless, not a penny. Hey, there’s value in his defense/rebounding and even being a point forward. But that value is no where close to 13.5 million dollars

I don’t get it Jefu? What I get is that we’re 41-41, what I get is that we run into the same damn problems every season. And what’s more is that NO ONE in the city of Philadelphia is willing to look at the elephant in the room,
and the ones who do, god bless them are deemed retarded by the retarded establishment!

Seriously, you wanted to get real? Let’s get real here then: When I ask you, the establishment what else. You don’t answer me, and I know why: There’s no other reason, you present no logic in your arguments whatsoever you just go ‘lol. I feel so sorry for you. I really do. I’ll stop picking on you now."

You can never, and you never have in general come up for another reason for our half-court lackluster play. It’s like:

Me: We suck in the half-court, here’s a player on our roster that absolutely sucks in the half-court.
Everyone else: Nuh-uh, he rebounds and he defends and blame the other Sixers!

You mean blame Jrue Holiday and his vastly superior isolation and shooting abilities? You mean blame Elton Brand and his pick and pop abilities? Oh, I get it: Let’s blame Thad Young, one of the few pure low post options on this team. That seems to be the theme around here lately, since he isn’t a pure four or a pure three, let’s just dump him.

Iguodala is the Elephant in the Room. Virtually every sportswriter in Philadelphia except Dei Lynam is sick and tired of it. Iggy’s 28 now, they know: It is what it is, it’s not some fan conspiracy outside of Libertyballers. It’s that everyone BUT this collective group understands the guy’s grossly overpaid and is largely the reason for our lack of success.

Oh, really. And where are these logic and facts to disprove everything I’ve said? We can go search through the multiude of games where everyone’s like: OMG, Don’t isolate Iggy, he’ll miss the shot!

Apparently though, that doesn’t matter when it comes to the long-term state of this franchise. We’ll only complain about Iggy’s limitations during the games. Or we’ll overlook them due to his defense and rebounding.

Sure enough, this is what Iverson fans did, when it was the other way around. As an elite scorer, but not a defender or anything else. But here’s the difference: Iverson won you games, Iguodala does not. No, WS doesn’t count as an actual NBA win, multiple wins in which lead you to the playoffs, which in turn lead you to a Finals Appearance or a Championship.

This is the clear distinctive difference between a role player and a elite player(of any kind) in this league. The fact that you can’t comprehend that, is not my fault(or anyone else’s) but your own

I have no idea if it even does. I just know that once you are negotiating with a union, labor laws provide a lot of protection for owners/employers, which allows the NBA to have all the rules for the draft, contract restrictions, salary caps and such, that otherwise would be completely illegal. Not sure this situation has ever come up before though.

Yeah, dude, that’s what I’m saying, it completely is. But because of the of the Union the league is protected from being sued. The CBA give the league the right to block a trade, right? The only wrinkle I’m unsure of here is the fact that the NBA owns the hornets, I don’t know how that complicates things.

You can try and sue whoever you want, doesn’t mean you have a case. I don’t think Chris Paul has one because the league exercised the right it negotiated with the players union to block a trade. Doesn’t matter if there’s collusion, in fact, the CBA is collusion, its a big agreement amongst a bunch of competitors to restrict the free market.

I wonder if the Lakers and the Rockets have some kind of case though. Something based on the conflict of interest created by the league owning the hornets and caving to pressure from other teams to block a trade for possibly the first time in league history.

Maybe

the lakers, rockets and paul together have a case- they’re all getting the shaft

So i’ve decided the real culprit in this is the atlanta hawks
it’s all their fault

Yeah

aren’t they the ones who didn’t draft Chris Paul 3rd?:)

2nd. They took Marvin Williams and the Jazz took Deron Williams 3rd. But I tend to just blame Atlanta for everything, regardless of the scenario

Point still stands though

atlanta makes the right pick and no one wants marvin williams :)

Hmmm, also if Atlanta drafted Chris Paul they may not have overpaid for JJ?

marvin williams was clearly the much better player.

I love the NBA

5 owners voted against the new CBA – i’d like to know which 5

and slightly over 200 players (out of 450 or so) voted :)

My guess is Bobcats, Sixers, Bucks, Wolves, Atlanta

I would say Bobcats, Wolves, Wiz, Cavs, Sixers

I would say lakers, celtics, knicks, heat, bulls

How does that make sense?

xEgan on Twitter

by xEgan on Dec 8, 2011 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

Because

It does

These are teams (and the mavs) who don’t care about caps or taxes and wouldn’t be all that interested in increasing the penalties (or reveneu sharing)

The new cba TARGETED these teams – the people who voted against it are most likely the teams that were considered ‘out of control’

I would pull out the celtics and add the mavericks.

But not a single CBA report ever talked about any of those teams…. all the big market owners were the ones that wanted to get on with the season. They only time they had a problem was when the hardline owners such as the Bobcats, Wolves, Sixers, etc tried to get rid of the sign and trade.

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, there will be no trade for Monta!

“basketball reasons” = “basketball sense” which means Ed Stefanski stopped this trade
