Darrell Arthur out for the year; Grizzlies interested in Marreese Speights?

The Sixers have long been rumored to be open trading backup power forward Marreese Speights, who is on the last year of his rookie contract and set to become a restricted free agent after the end of the season. The Grizzlies have often been rumored to be one of the potential suitors, and with confirmation that backup forward Darrell Arthur will miss the entire season due to a torn Achilles tendon, that possibility just became more plausible.

The Commercial Appeal, the predominant newspaper in Memphis, has published a rumor that made Michael absolutely giddy. According to the report, claiming sources with knowledge of the Grizzlies thinking, the Grizzlies are interested in Speights, and he speculated a deal could include Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez for Speights.

If you remember, Henry, the 12th pick in the 2010 NBA draft out of Kansas, had some big fans here at LibertyBallers. We had him 8th on our big board the day before the draft, although I'll give myself a pat on the back for having him correctly going 12th.

The sweet shooting lefty struggled in his rookie season at the age of 19, making only 2 of 17 three pointers over 38 games before missing the rest of the season due to a knee injury. He will miss at least the first month of the season due to a second degree right ankle sprain.

Still, the ability Henry showed as a spot-up catch and shoot player at Kansas along with a compelling physical profile makes him, even with the injury concerns and disappointing rookie season, a good haul for the Marreese Speights, a talented but underachieving forward who doesn't appear to have a future with the club.

If they did this, who’s Doug Collins’ 4th big off the bench if they deal Speights before this WC road trip to start the season? Would the Grizzlies wait or would they go in another direction?

Xavier Henry’s a nice name, had a nice college career, but he was brutal as a rookie.

I have a feeling Vucevic and Battie, and possibly even Brackins, are going to be ahead of Speights in the rotation. So the same as currently.

I would have thought that until Collins said that he didn’t want to rush Vucevic and Battie’s knee is balky right now and DC said he’s not in BBall shape. Just makes me wonder how you move a big for 2 smalls. Brackins is playing SF, so he’s not a “4th big”, right?

I dunno, might be a little early to move him with what they’re facing. Only problem? The Griz have a need and are willing to part with something substantially better than the 2nd rd pick compensation we’ve been hearing. Do you sacrifice to get the better return?

Brackins is more of a “stretch 4” than a 3.

Even so Speights only played 743 minutes last season. That is 9 minutes per game over an 82 game season. He’s not exactly leaving a big hole in the line-up. I assume they will go small often with Thad playing PF.

I wonder if adding one Xavier means the other gets cut?

What do you think of Vasquez? (I don’t really know either of these guys)

"Great, I got that "excited/scared" feeling. Like 98% excited, 2% scared. Or maybe it's more - It could be two - it could be 98% scared, 2% excited but that's what makes it so intense."

Vasquez played great for us last year! He didn’t put up huge numbers, but when he was in the game, he did what was asked of him. We (Memphis) need another big now, but I really don’t want to get rid of Henry or Greivis! Will you guys take Jeremy Pargo and Sam Young and a pick?

I would honestly rather have a trade exemption or a 2nd rounder instead of Xavier. Xavier just seems like just another Craig Brackins- 1st round pick and a waste of 1.4 million.

That being said, I dislike Speights so much that I would make this deal in a heartbeat.

Xavier is a better player than Meeks, who would be much better suited off the bench. This could indicate a future lineup of Jrue-Xavier-ET-Thad-Vucevic, which would be a really interesting group. Obviously a dominant rebounding big would help but OMGHOWDIDITTAKETHISLONGTOFREAKOUTABOUTXAVIER.

How about Speezy to the Clips for Eric Bledsoe? Then flip Lou to New Orleans for Carl Landry?

On a side note, hasn’t it been proven that nobody wants Kris Humphries, Reggie Evans or Kyrylo Fesenko? Why not sign one of them to the MLE?

Love the Sixers, love the Cavs. Don't sympathize, we'll win a championship someday. Someday...

You’ll have to excuse me while I vomit all over the internet.

Hahahahaha are any of them worse than Battie?

No but at least two of them will cost considerably more. Fesenko more as well.

Ugh. Why would anyone want Carl Landry?

(note: If you’re having trouble finding him he’s number 190)

What makes it worse is that I only included players who are listed as the same height or taller than him. He comes in at 224 without the restrictions.

Hawes is at 106 and Fesenko is at 104!
