NBA Draft '11: College Prospect Thread 1/29

After the ugliness that occurred inside the Wells Fargo Center last night, why not get your mind on something a little more optimistic? Scouting potential new members for the Sixers is never something that gets me down and is actually scientifically proven to raise spirits.

It's been a while since we've had one of these as the NFL Playoffs and a few less than stellar Saturday match-ups got in the way. Now that conference play is in full swing, we can really start to get a good sense of which prospects tickle our respective fancies. That being said, let's get to it McNulty.

Georgetown at Villanova - 12:00 PM, ESPN (Austin Freeman, Mouphtaou Yarou, Cory Fisher, Maalik Wayns)

Xavier at Richmond - 12:00 PM, ESPN2 (Justin Harper, Tu Holloway)

Florida at Mississippi State - 12:00 PM, CBSSports.com (Kenny Boynton, Vernon Macklin, Patric Young, Not Renardo Sidney)

More chances to check out some potential prospects after the jump.

Star-divide

Minnesota at Purdue - 1:00 PM, CBS (JaJuan Johnson, E'Twaun Moore, Rodney Williams)

Florida State at Clemson - 12:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Chris Singleton)

Louisville at UCONN - 12:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Kemba Walker, Alex Oriakhi)

Syracuse at Marquette - 3:00 PM, ESPNU (Kris Joseph, Rick Jackson!, Scoop Jardine, Vander Blue)

North Carolina State at North Carolina - 2:00 PM, ESPN (CJ Leslie, John Henson, Tyler Zeller, Harrison Barnes, Dexter Strickland)

Colorado at Baylor - 1:30 PM, ESPN3.com (Perry Jones, LaceDarius Dunn, Quincy Acy, Alec Burks)

Georgia at Kentucky - 4:00 PM, ESPN (Travis Leslie, Trey Thompkins, Terrence Jones, Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb)

BYU at New Mexico - 4:00 PM, Versus (Jimmer Fredette)

Tennessee at Mississippi - 4:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Tobias Harris, Scotty Hopson)

Ohio State at Northwestern - 6:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, William Buford)

Kansas State at Kansas - 7:00 PM, ESPN (Markieff Morris, Marcus Morris, Josh Selby, Tyshawn Taylor, Wally Judge, Jacob Pullen)

Arkansas at Vanderbilt - 6:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Jeff Taylor, Festus Ezeli, John Jenkins)

Pittsburgh at Rutgers - 8:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Gilbert Brown, Ashton Gibbs, Brad Wanamaker)

Missouri at Texas (CHECK THIS ONE OUT IF YOU CAN!) - 9:00 PM, ESPNU (Jordan Hamilton, Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph, J'Covan Brown, Tony Mitchell, Kim English)

West Virginia at Cincinnati - 8:00 PM, ESPN3.com (Yancy Gates, Kevin Jones)

Enjoy a college ball filled day lads. My personal favorite, if you couldn't already tell, is the Missouri/Texas game later on this evening. Missouri, along with Baylor, was one of my adopted favorite teams coming into the season. I love their uptempo style of play and the intense defensive pressure they bring day in and day out. Plus, it give me a chance to root for a guy named Kim English.

This is such a great thread man.

I had College basketball on in the back thinking to myself “it’d be great if there was a place that would concisely tell me who all the prospects were in this game i’m watching”

then 5 mins later found this thread :).

I’m watching Xavier vs. Richmond right now and Tu Holloway just pulled out the isolation 3-pointer pump fake in an attempt to draw a foul. Fortunately for him it worked.

I’ll watch some games later. I have to babysit my niece & nephew right now & since it’s not raining for once in Oregon I’m going to take them to feed the birds.

I'd like to see the Sixers draft Lucas Nogueira in the 2nd round

but from what I heard he could go in the first round.

Forgot to Mention

UCLA at Arizona State at 3:30 PM – it’ll be on various FoxSports channels and The Comcast Network if you get that in the Philly area – Check out Tyler Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee in that game

Also USC is at Arizona at 7:30 PM. I can’t find where it’s going to be televised though. If you find it, it’ll be a great chance to catch of glimpse of Derrick Williams (read our Derek’s profile of him if you’re interested). Also keep an eye on USC’s Nikola Vucevic.

It looks like our roster is staying the same...

So “who” do we want in the draft? Not necessarily a specific player…

We’re in a weird position. We’ll most likely be out of the Lottery. We’ll most likely have Iggy and Brand still on the roster. Evan Turner has shown glimpses (albeit inconsistently) of positive development, but enough to ignore the SG position? We think Jrue is pretty much set at PG. Thad’s probably on the way out. Speights can’t buy minutes. We can’t even pretend to have a big man to anchor either side of the ball.

So… lots of holes… not enough good picks. The draft sites have us selecting SF’s and SG’s right now. Doesn’t really make sense given the make-up of this roster, but whatever.

by cliphord on Jan 29, 2011 8:12 PM PST reply actions

There is another basic problem. This draft seems to really suck in terms of franchise-altering talent. I’m not sure that winning the lottery and getting the #1 pick would do anything for this team, unless they got super-lucky and Enes Kanter becomes the next Hakeem Olajuwon. But my point is, super-lucky. And in this draft, you could get just as super-lucky in the mid-first as you could in the lottery. I’m generally unimpressed all the way through. So, BPA? Or BBA (Best Big Available)? Normally, you go BPA, but that’s when there’s a choice between a guy who is clearly superior but plays a position you already kind of have covered and a guy who isn’t as good but plays the position you really need. Like, if you believe that Turner is going to be a special player, you take him over Favors or Cousins, even though they are more what you need in terms of position. If everyone is kinda “meh” (even in the top 10, and we’re not likely to pick in the top 10), I’m thinking I’d rather have a “meh” PF or C than a “meh” SG or SF. We already have a “meh” SG and SF. I guess what most draft sites do this early on is put the next best guy on their list in the next slot. But you would have to think that DiLeo is thinking size this year, unless it’s a big reach. And I might go Tristan Thompson or one of the Morris brothers or even Faried over a “meh” SF, even if that’s what’s next on the list in terms of player rating. Given the overall quality level in this year’s draft, these guys wouldn’t be all that much of a reach over the “next guy on the list” approach. Obviously, our draft purists would disagree, and take the SF, if he’s higher-rated than the bigger guy.

by dweebowitz on Jan 29, 2011 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Actually, those draft purists gave us Thad Young, Rodney Carney and Mo Speights.

Enough, fill your needs, get better.

by LeQuan Glover on Jan 30, 2011 1:36 AM PST up reply actions

If we don’t plan on keeping Iguodala then wouldn’t a swingman be a need as well? Do you value short term needs over long term needs?

by yosoysean on Jan 30, 2011 9:26 AM PST up reply actions

At some point, Jrue will retire, we’d better get a PG in here right away… :)

by dweebowitz on Jan 30, 2011 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

Haha. That is far to long term. How about medium term?

by yosoysean on Jan 31, 2011 8:11 AM PST up reply actions

Seriously, though, is a short-term need not also a long- (or medium-) term need? We aren’t privy to what the plan with Iguodala is, it could be that they plan to keep him unless they’re blown away by an offer (which, of course would likely be true about any player on the roster…where oh where are the offers that blow us away for Krapono and the Donger?) but we know for sure that they’re marching Hawes out there every night. There is definitely a need, both now and in the future, for a legitimate NBA C on this roster. No?

I’m not arguing that they should not take a SF if that SF is clearly superior to any big available when they pick. They should absolutely take that clearly superior SF. What I am arguing is that if there are two players of approximately equal ability (given that it’s hard to really compare two players who play two different positions in completely different ways, and that scouting opinions may vary as to who is superior, anyway), you might as well pick the player that meets an immediate need, even if a majority of draft taking heads believe that the guy who doesn’t meet an immediate need might be slightly better. Like, if a SF is projected by most to fall into our draft slot, but the guy two slots later is a C, maybe we take the C.

by dweebowitz on Jan 31, 2011 8:38 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with you 100%. My post was, much less eloquently, pointing out the same thing you were saying in the 2nd paragraph. I wouldn’t want to see the Sixers pass up on a good SF/SG just because they felt that C/PF was a bigger need. They are both needs. Sure I’d prefer if they took a bigman but if, say, Harrison Barnes slipped to 14 or so (I still believe in his potential but wouldn’t want to take him top 5) I wouldn’t want to see the Sixers pass him up for Patric Young. If the choice is between someone like Young and Alec Burks (looking approximately equal right now) I would be disappointed if they didn’t pick Young.

In summary: I don’t want to see them to pick a C/PF just because the most immediate need is C/PF. Of course this all assumes that the Sixers don’t see Iguodala as a part of their longterm plan. Though I would think that if Barnes fell to their laps they’d consider letting Iguodala go. Or at least I hope so.

I love the use of the word “meh”. Its kinda how I feel about the team. Just “meh” (not capitalized).

To me, the only good argument FOR drafting a SF/SG though is that we see what a good shooter does for everybody else. However, I dont know if there are any really good shooters (outside of Jimmer – whos a bit small to draft too high) in this draft.

We have 2 needs: a Shooter and Defensive big who isnt an offensive cipher. I’d prefer a shooter can defend 3’s (like a Chase Budinger) – is that Jordan Hamilton? I dunno.

(ok – we also need a franchise palyer but I agree that they are not likely in this draft after maybe 1-3. )

by shova on Jan 31, 2011 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

Picking in the middle of the pack, I would actually be OK with a defensive big who is mostly an offensive cipher, assuming his D is good enough, and he boards and blocks shots, and is athletic. A guy who can score on putbacks and the occasional oop dunk. Basically, Sammy with a brain :)

by dweebowitz on Jan 31, 2011 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

LOL - thats what i was alluding to....

I just dont want another Sammy (though he admittedly looks better than what we got now…).

That seems to be more likely than an impact shooter (hence my Rip Hamiltion desperation faux pas) – looks like some POTENTIALLY decent bigs available (Vesely Thompkins Nogueira). Michael metions Tristan Thompson above.

Maybe we can get a late first or early second and get your boy Faried or Jordan Hamilton.

I cant watch Speights and Hawes again next year. I cant watch Lou BOSSing it up from Three.

*Someone* around this league...

…has GOT to want an awesome scoring machine who loves to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game like Tha BOSS! I figure he’s got to be at least a few bags of slightly-deflated balls and a couple of used jock straps…

The good news (or bad news depending on how you look at it) is that it was reported that Thorn wanted to draft Jimmer last season in the late 1st with the Nets.
