Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"So I think the Pacers should send Mike Dunleavy, T.J. Ford, Jeff Foster (all expiring contracts) and Paul George to Philadelphia -- along with their first-round pick from next year (top three protected, losing said protection the year after) -- for Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala and Marreese Speights."

It certainly looks more favorable from a Sixers POV. What do you guys think?

It’s funny how the perception around Iguodala is changing. Last year people wanted us to give him up for expiring contracts.

From basketball point of view...

Im sure Dunleavy/Ford/Foster is not better than Iguodala/Brand/Spreights. From a salary point of view…well, I’d still rather win games.

Cap space is only useful if you want to sign free agents. I’m not interested in recreating the Larry Brown Era by signing a bunch of veteran role players, nor am I interested in recreating the Ed Stefanski Era by tying up a huge amount of cap in a single free agent. The team needs young talent all across the board. If you are going to trade your best player, you are flat-out rebuilding, and a bunch of cap space doesn’t help with that.

I'd still rather win games now (or at least be competitive in game)

while Jrue, Evan and the rest of the youngsters learn the NBA game. IN 3-4 years, when Brand, Noce and all the vets have finally gone, the youngsters can take over (if they haven’t already done that) and they won’t have to start from the bottom of the heap.

I’d rather the young guys take their lumps and grow together now. And get the high draft picks. But either way, trading Iguodala for cap relief doesn’t get them where they need to go. They need to either keep the guys they have (including Iguodala) and do the best they can, or get more young guys, through lots of picks gained from trading Iguodala and young, high-upside players also gained from trading Iguodala. I obviously prefer the “get more young guys” approach, but either way, “sign more veteran free agents” isn’t the answer. That’s the way to .500 and a first-round exit.

I'm very intrigued

Cap space, a pick next year, and the idea of a Jrue-Turner-George low cost lineup for years is drool-worthy. We’d be unconsciously thin up front this year, but our ceiling is 7th or 8th seed so I’d go for it.

something to consider

I would consider that trade next off-season if Indy has a top 10….personally I would rather hold on to Iggy b/c he’s a top 10(maybe top 5) open court player in the league…but it s something worth thinking about b/c Elton Brand will never live up to that contract and frankly it’s crippling the organization right now..i’d prolly offer willie green or Thad Young instead of speights though cuz we need big men…I don’t know what we’re going to do though, if Brand is looking the same way he did last year I wonder how willing Snyder & Luuko would be to just swollowing it and buy him out….they bought webber out when he had like 40 mil left, I think they gave him something like 35(not sure)…I tell you one thing, it would at least garuntee us a top 5 next year, and Indy is either looking at Paul George as trade bait or Danny Granger’s replacement…b/c Granger can’t play the 4 in the NBA and George can’t play the 2, he’d get burned repeatedly….Stiffanski put us in a impossible position!!!! They never traded Iguadala last year b/c it was no fair value…there are no contenders out there with young talent that would be suitable for Iguadala and a bunch of late 1st rounders won’t get it done, nor is expiring contracts…TOUGH SPOT!!!!
