Rod Thorn set to become Sixers president

Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Sixers are set to hire former Nets president Rod Thorn as team president, with Ed Stefanski remaining as General Manager.  An announcement could come as early as Thursday according to Wojnarowski's sources.

More info to come as this unfolds.  Is this a good move?  Does this  change your opinion much on the long term future of the team?  Are you more at ease now knowing Thorn has the final say?  What is Ed Stefanski's role with the ball club, long term?  Would you have preferred this route over gutting the front office and going with Kevin Pritchard/Mark Warkentien/<insert your GM candidate here>?   Does DiLeo still retain his influence in the draft?  Do the higher ups have a long term plan?

Discuss in the comments section.

Edit

According to Dennis Deitch of the Delco Times, Thorn will be in charge of personnel moves, with the draft and scouting under Stefanski's jurisdiction.  Link: twitter.

Like him better than Stefanski but would’ve preferred Pritch/Wark. What’s Thorn’s transaction history? And when he says Stefanski is in change or the draft he means DiLeo.

Was it Thorn that gave Todd Macculloch that awful contract? If so Spencer Hawes agent is smiling.

I wonder what this means for AI9? He probably stays but Stefanski was his biggest supporter(probably second now behind Collins)

3rd behind coach K, lol

Great trades, terrible contracts.

Sort of like a BK, except BK could never actually pull off the trades, so all that was left was the bad contracts :)

This thought makes me smile and feel at peace with the world:

Thorn/Collins >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Stefanski/Jordan.

i dig it

I am not exactly sure what the duties of a president are, but my initial reaction is positive. I like Rod Thorn and was relatively impressed with the recap of his moves/transactions.

Im so sour on Ed Stefanski that any front office movement that doesnt involve him packing his bags will not resonate as well as it could. So does this set the table for a Stefanski firing or does it just mean Rod is good and it is better to have 2 people doing the jobs than just one? I seriously have no idea and would like to hear a smarter person’s thoughts. I would throw my vote of confidence to Kevin Pritchard. Theres a lot of hate being undeservedly sent his way, and getting him would be a nice little coup.

Would have preferred Pritchard or Warkentien, but Thorn is a smart guy, at least. If I had to guess, it appears that they would like to remove Stefanski, but not do it in a way that’s as embarrassing to the team as “We realize we should have fired this guy at the end of the season, but we just didn’t, so we’re going to ease someone else into his position, and let that guy do the dirty.” I know Thorn and Stefanski are buds from their Nets days together, but I can’t believe they would get rid of Tony D (the one useful front office guy they have that everyone in the world respects) in favor of Stefanski running their draft.

Stefanski has effectively been neutered, and this is a Good Thing.

However…

Are they really trying to build Nets South or something? Why wouldn’t they take people from winning organizations like everyone else? Why would you hire the architect of the second-worst team ever? It’s not like the Nets have this proud history of championships and we’re just trying to bottle the magic here. Thorn is a pretty respected guy, but you’d have to think that with so many guys with better track records available, they could have made a better choice.

I’m more confused than anything by this, although pretty much anyone is an improvement from Stefanski.

At least the folicle count in out front office increased.

anyone else find it interesting that the nets and sixers pretty much just swapped front offices? no? i didn’t think so

Yeah, non-creative garbage owners picking the same guys over and over again. I would have rather the Sixers did nothing than add another guy from NJ.

Unlike the rest of you, I’m not so down on Stefanski that I see this as a good thing. The team still has the same problems, and adding in another voice diminishes Collins and Stefanski will only confuse the decision-making -process.

Thorn trades to get Kidd and VC. Stefanski… Brand,

wow

Certainly something to wake up to. I don’t love it because of their Nets ties together, but at least this brings in a guy to trump Stefanski so at this point, any front office move save for extending Stefanski is OK by me.

Change Gone Come

It’s been looooong..looong time commming…but I KNOOOOOOW, change gone coommmme, O YES IT IS!!!!!!! I don’t know(nor do I care) what happens to stefanski, but at least we finally have a trigger man in the front office…right or wrong, weak or strong..Rod thorn will pull it…and right now that’s all we can ask for…the biggest trade stefanski ever pulled off was the Dalembert move…and this team has needed alot more than that over the last 3 yrs….also it’s all about who you know…and Rod Thorn is alot more connected than stefanski

Frankly, it can only mean good things. Rod Thorn built that Kidd-Carter-Jefferson team that due to Kristic injury, was never able to meet it’s full potential. Frankly, I don’t think this Sixers team is close to that trio. Turner is a question mark till I see him in a real NBA game. Frankly, I still believe Evan’s a raw player and it’ll take him time to gel in the NBA. I guess Iguodala’s a RJ(giving him the major benefit of the doubt). The only one that really has that top-flight potential is Jrue Holiday.

I’m pessimistic, 33-35 wins tops.

Terrfic Move to a very good offseason!

Rod Thorn is a highly respected Executive who has a very good track record, along with fimialrity with our current GM and Head Coach. Both Thorn & Ed built the NJ Net team that made a few appearances in the NBA Finals. Let not forget Thorn was apart of building the Chicago Bulls Dynasty as well. I feel more confident today, then I had with our front office since Pat Croce was on board. Throw in our terrific scouting department and this team is headed into the right direction.

Hiring a veteran Head Coach, a respected veteran Executive, landing the #2 overall pick has been a very good offseason thus far. The right people are now in place and hopefully they will assemble the right players to make the team a true title contender.

Putting in Work

I just listened to the Press Conferance, reading between the lines I think Thorn took the job b/c Snyder will put out the money they didn’t want to in Jersey..and even with the Russian Mob now running the Nets the expectations weren’t realistic especially w/ a low-ball contract.
