Summer League Game 5 Thread: Sixers/Jazz
Early game today so no time for a long preview. This is the last shot for guys like Cedric Simmons, Trent Plaisted, and Ndudi Ebi to audition for a training camp invite here. At this point I would say none of them get one, but without Marreese Speights, they'll have more time to show what they got. I'll throw something together this weekend on the Sixers week, but for now, just enjoy the box scores and brace yourself for Vegas because this baby is not televised.
One more time: I'll continue to defend Evan Turner until halfway through his rookie season, no matter how bad he looks. I suggest you try to keep breathing as well, seeing as he's a rookie on a team that's hoping to contend in 3-4 years. If he elbows Gordon Hayward in the teeth, I think I'd be okay with it.
Oh and keep an eye out for an article I wrote for RU, it's scheduled to post at 11 -- let me know what you think, because I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it.
Thread it here, gents.

To me, here’s the only thing that matters about Evan Turners play this week.
It should open his eyes and educate him and motivate him. It should show him how far he has to go to be ready to play in the NBA. This isn’t the Big 10 (which was a down league last year). This is the best of the best, and even the scrubs were having fun with him for the past week. Hopefully this sends him back to the gym, working on whatever he needs to work at, getting in game shape, working on some strength so he isn’t pushed around in the post.
This was his first week in the new school, going from a weak public school to harvard university. He’s in the deep end and now he realizes how deep it is. Let’s see how he reacts. If he still looks like this in preseason games, then I’ll start to be concerned.

Great post, Sporting Fanaticism! But like those who really believed in Turner, I will withold judgment until mid-way through the season. Everyone who read my posts knows who i thought the Sixers would select, but it is all a crap-shoot, betting on anyone who hasn’t ever played in the NBA.
Some guys just have it, though and you can see it whenever they play. I don’t want to go into a long story over this, but I watched a summer scrimmage in Dallas when Mark Aguire (Their big star at the time) arrived late. The coach, taking offense at this made him sit for quite a while and the teams were very even, until he entered the game. A real baller takes over a game when all the others are scrubs, and thus far ET is not a baller.
What i meant to say wasn’t that I wasn’t going to believe in him but now that we have sort of a baseline of where Evan Turner is. If he’s at the same baseline in 3 months (training camp) that’s a concern because he’s had 3 months to get in better game shape, build up some strength etc…
Like with Mareese Speights, I haven’t fully given up on him yet but I’m disappointing he still seems lost on defense and in regards to anything but shooting. For someone who has already been in the league 2 years he should have much better overall performance in the summer league, like Holiday.
Anyone know why Speights only played 3 games?

evan turner will be good. He’s adjusting. I dont have solid facts or any links, just my guy insticts. He will find his way.
same. He’s a good, smart basketball player. I think there’s a bigger learning curve for him especially to learn to play off the ball most of the time.
He does need to limit his turnovers more though.

Frustrating
14 turnovers in the first half.
I’d like to see turner demand the ball more and be more agressive. He’s just kind of blending in right now… not what I wanna see.
Tough game so far but our complete team except ET and possibly Simmons are scrubs, if that. I think it is very hard to play decent in defense of ET with these team mates. I am willing to give him time as ya’ll above and am not at all worried. I do remember a year ago how bad Jrue looked and I think ET looks better than Jrue a year ago.
But, watching this game is real tough!
jrue bein so bad last year (and sick this year) in the summer league is like the perfect insurance kinda thing for turner bein so bad this year
There’s no causative correlation you can apply to Turner just because of Holidays experience.
