Interesting, another knock on Turner.

Ziller himself says the stat is flawed in Turner’s case. And honestly, anytime Turner was on the bench it was almost by definition scrub time. I’d say a relatively small percentage of the non-turner minutes were during competitive games… as Tuner played 37 minutes or more in 19 of 22 games after returning from injury.

Is it just me or has nothing but negative stuff come out on Turner since we got the 2nd pick? People really don’t want to see him team up with Holiday and Iguodala.

I agree….I do keep seeing more anti Turner stuff than pro Turner. And I don’t mean specifically this website but all over.

I wasn’t meaning this site, I was meaning all over also it has gotten to the point where it seems like people are trying to come up with a way to knock the potential Turner-Iguodala combo.

Yeah I wasn’t implying that you were talking about LB specifically.

It almost makes me think that stuff is intentionally being floated out there to try and curb the fans disappointment if Turner isn’t selected.

Personally, if I was the Sixers and I was considering drafting Favors or someone else then I would put it out there that they are taking Turner and that it’s a foregone conclusion in hopes that teams will offer some great packages to get the number 2 pick. Seems like more teams are willing to move up for Turner than anyone else not named Wall.

I think the media is paid to talk about something. Since they can’t legitimately sell a Wall/Turner debate stirring up noise about the #2 pick is the next best thing to write about.

Makes sense.

people are just jealous… Collins is gonna finally make Iguodala a smash-mouth SF that goes hard to the rim more than he takes those wild jumpshots that brick off the far-iron every time. And with Turner’s deadly accurate mid-range and his ability to knock from 3, this can be a power combo, and if not, we can always send Iguodala elsewhere. I also think that since Turner is making 500 shots a day, it will greatly improve his shooting accuracy, because making 500 shots, he takes SO many shots a day that its hard not to get in a rhythm.

I hope so.

People (media, fans, scouts, gms, etc.) tend to over-think these things.

There’s a heckuva lot flawed using +/- data on someone who:
1) played as many minutes as turner
2) missed the cupcake schedule (as the author pointed out)
3) Pretty much only sat when games were decided.

The author points out what happens if you take OUT some of those cupcake games Turner didn’t play in and adjusted the # accordingly, but the truth is that number would have been higher had Turner played in those games, as most other prospects got the cupcake bump Turner never got.

I don’t even take that into consideration.

Yeah, when he is playing 37040 minutes almost every game its hard to this those few other minutes were very meaningful. if they were improtant minutes then Turner would have been on the floor.

by tk76 on Jun 6, 2010 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

should read 37-40 minutes.

I was using the word provided in the article.

But whatever makes you laugh.

never liked the plus minus stat… it tends to come out weird during gmes

by killacaravagio on Jun 6, 2010 9:15 AM PDT reply actions

I’m not a fan of the +/- stat in general.

by Jordan Sams on Jun 6, 2010 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

Same because a lot of times the other team will leave their studs in a little longer after the other team’s studs have been taken out in order to get back. And maybe in Turner’s case, he was probably put in with the scrubs at one point so the scrubs have some experience playing alongside their leader, and the team probably lost in the +/- in those situations.

Sortable Stats

Here’s a link to DraftExpress’s sortable stats on this:
 http://www.draftexpress.com/stats.php?q=plusminus&year=2009/10&league=NCAA&per=pergame&qual=sec2010&sort2=DESC&pos=all&stage=all&min=20&conference=0&sort=8

This is why, to me, plus-minus is useful. It raises red flags. Turner’s plus-minus red flag can be mostly dismissed. But at least it’s good to know it’s there.

…thanks for the useless article?

I find it amazing how the “experts” overall agree that Turner and Wall are the 2 best in the draft and then they throw an useless articles about him. I am sure you can find the same stats about Wall, where is that article???

I will be extremely upset if the 76ers do not draft Turner. They must try to find a shooting guard, now.

There was an article on basketball prospectus about John Wall’s underwhelming (statistical) season:
